What's spring without some lovely blooms?
The sunshine has finally arrived, and if you’re planning a garden party, you might want to finish things off with some fabulous flowers. Looking for tips? We asked the experts how to create the perfect spring centrepiece.
How To Create A Spring Centrepiece
The Blooms
‘Spring offers some of the most stunning blooms, so let them take centre stage; they really do all the work for you if you know how to arrange them,’ says David Denyer, an expert at Eflorist. The key? Seasonal flowers, of course – with plenty of variety.
‘Start with a lush, green base; eucalyptus, ruscus, or ivy work beautifully to create fullness and movement,’ David advises. ‘Then, choose seasonal flowers as your focal point: tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and ranunculus guarantee a fresh feel. Place these slightly off-centre for a more expertly styled effect, and finish off with delicate, airy elements such as waxflowers, gypsophila, or trailing jasmine. This will soften the arrangement and give it some dimension.’
The Colours
When it comes to colours, pastels are a classic choice, but you can also shake up your bouquet with a few bolder shades. ‘Soft pinks, yellows and creams blend effortlessly to create a delicate, spring-like look, but for a bigger statement, try pairing buttery yellows with pops of lilac or coral,’ David suggests. ‘A limited palette of three to four shades always keeps the display looking cohesive.’
The Vase
And in terms of vases? ‘A centrepiece is only as good as its foundation, and the vase plays a bigger role than most people realise,’ David warns. ‘A low, wide vase or a footed bowl is ideal for a tablescape – it allows flowers to spill out naturally while keeping the arrangement at a height that doesn’t block conversation. You can create a grid using floral tape to help evenly space out the stems, and always vary their length; this will give everything a more organic, garden-like look.’
The Finishing Touches
The gorgeous blooms might speak for themselves, but if you want to take things up a notch, try adding some handcrafted elements.
‘For something truly unique, incorporate subtle spring touches into the arrangement,’ says David. ‘Speckled eggs nestled among the flowers are a charming seasonal touch – but not overly themed – while sprigs of fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme will bring some texture and a bit of natural fragrance. You can also add some woven willow branches or twigs for a more rustic look.’
The Upkeep
After so much hard work, there’s nothing more important than making sure your flowers last – and according to David, adding a touch of bleach to the water is the best way to do it.
‘The biggest challenge with fresh flowers is keeping them looking vibrant,’ he reflects. ‘A simple trick to extend their life is putting a quarter teaspoon of bleach into the water – it keeps your water from getting cloudy and slows any bacterial growth.’
Another tip? Trimming the stems first. ‘Always trim stems at an angle before placing them in the water, and refresh the water every two days. Keeping your centrepiece away from direct sunlight and heat sources is also a great way to help it stay fresh for longer.’
Finally, a daffodil hack: ‘If you’re using daffodils, let them sit in water separately for a few hours before adding them to the main arrangement,’ David notes. ‘This prevents their sap from affecting the other flowers.’ That’s your spring centrepiece sorted…
