What to do when a spillage strikes
Gorgeous cream sofas and pastel upholstery might look picture-perfect, but you’d be forgiven for spending more than a bit of time fretting about fabric stains. If you happen to be facing an unfortunate tea or coffee mishap, however, don’t panic: we’ve asked the team at Bio-D for some tips. Here’s how to remove tea and coffee stains, according to the experts.
How To Remove Tea & Coffee Stains From Clothing, Ceramics & Kitchen Surfaces
‘Tea and coffee stains are a common household frustration, but removing them doesn’t have to mean relying on harsh chemicals,’ says Heather Nixon, Bio-D’s sustainability, NPD and regulatory manager. Plant-based cleaning solutions are a brilliant alternative – plus, they’re safer for your home (and the planet).
The most important thing to remember when it comes to stains? It’s all about getting in there fast. Both tea and coffee contain natural compounds known as tannins – the elements which give the drinks their rich colour and flavour. Unfortunately, however, tannins can ‘bind to fabrics and surfaces, making stains more stubborn over time,’ explains Heather. ‘This means that acting quickly really is the key to tackling stains effectively.’
Removing Stains From Clothing
While lemon juice, white vinegar or baking soda can provide a quick fix, it’s always a good idea to invest in a few specialised cleaning products. ‘Our Laundry Bleach is an excellent eco-friendly alternative to traditional stain removers,’ says Heather. ‘Free from chlorine and optical brighteners, it uses the natural power of oxygen to break down stains without harming delicate fabrics or polluting waterways. Simply pre-soak stained clothing or apply directly before washing to lift marks effortlessly.’
For more stubborn clothing stains, targeted stain removers are your best bet. ‘Our Laundry and Stain Remover Bar offers a powerful, plant-based solution,’ Heather adds. ‘Simply wet the fabric, apply the bar directly to the stain, let it sit, and wash as usual for the best results.’
Removing Stains From Mugs
Mixing the Laundry Bleach with water will also help to lift tea and coffee stains from ceramics. ‘Simply add one tablespoon of Bio-D Laundry Bleach directly into a stained mug, boil water in your kettle, then carefully pour into the mug, filling it close to the top,’ Heather explains. ‘Hot water activates the oxygen-based bleach, helping to dissolve stains.’
Give the solution a good mix, and then let it soak ‘for at least 30 minutes – longer if the stains are particularly stubborn,’ Heather continues. ‘Rinse thoroughly with Bio-D Washing Up Liquid and warm water.’
Removing Stains From Kitchen Worktops
If your once-sparkling work surfaces have been marred by tea and coffee stains, you can restore them to their former glory using a simple trick: washing up liquid (and a bit of elbow grease).
‘Coffee rings on counters, mugs, and sinks can be easily removed with a gentle scrub using a plant-based detergent,’ Heather confirms. ‘Our All Purpose Sanitiser or Washing Up Liquid works wonders. Unlike conventional cleaners that often contain synthetic fragrances and petrochemicals, these products use biodegradable, non-toxic ingredients that are tough on stains but kind to the planet.’
