Taking to Instagram to share a peek into life at home with his new baby, Bieber showcased a rather unique modular sofa that’s since received plenty of buzz from both curious followers and in-the-know designers. But what makes the piece so special?

According to Sofa Club’s interiors expert, Monika Puccio, it’s beloved by multiple celebrities besides Bieber. ‘Adored by stars worldwide – including Kim Kardashian and Frank Ocean – the ‘Dune’ sofa featured on Justin’s Instagram is designed by French furniture designer Pierre Paulin,’ she explains. ‘While the product is listed on their website without a price, each section of the sofa is believed to priced at upwards of $5,000.’
And why a modular sofa itself? It’s all thanks to the rising demand for ‘70s-style conversation pits, apparently. ‘Conversation pits are making a comeback,’ Monika tells us. ‘This could be thanks to an increased awareness of self-care, less priority on television, and more emphasis on in-the-moment communication, but it can also be attributed to the rise of maximalism and the desire for more statement pieces in the home.’

So, while Bieber’s statement piece seems to be an A-listers-only kind of investment, it’s a definite nod to the retro renaissance – and, luckily, there are plenty of ways to get the classic ‘70s look for less. Think dark wooden sideboards, clashing prints, and any kind of low-slung seating.
‘Modular sofas are a great way to create a conversation pit at home, since each section can be tailored to your specific lifestyle and spatial requirements,’ says Monika. ‘Curved sofas are also a core trend right now, shifting away from harsh lines.’ Who knew Justin Bieber held so much sway in the design world?
