Exclusive: The Ultimate Guide To Kitchen Design

How To Update Your Kitchen Without Renovating

Want to give your space a refresh without starting from scratch? ‘You don’t always need to tear everything out,’ says Bally Aulak, kitchen design consultant at Wickes. ‘Upgrading worktops, taps, changing tiles and splashbacks, or even adding a fresh coat of paint can make a big difference.’

How To Transform Your Kitchen On A Budget

No kitchen design guide is complete without a few vital budget considerations, and the big question, of course, is how you can achieve a brand new look without breaking the bank. Bally suggests easy-assembly kitchen ranges in a variety of styles: ‘Our Lifestyle kitchens are an affordable option,’ she notes. ‘Each unit is designed for easy assembly, with plenty of online support for DIY enthusiasts.’

How To Avoid Costly Mistakes

If you are planning a big renovation, the key to creating your dream kitchen lies in analysing the benefits and drawbacks of your current space, before creating an airtight plan from there.

‘Instead of rushing into a redesign, spend time in your current kitchen to understand its strengths and weaknesses,’ advises Bally. Then, think about the elements you want to invest in to really maximise functionality. ‘Investing in features like drawers and corner pull-outs might seem costly upfront, but they offer long-term convenience,’ she adds. ‘Drawers provide easy access to cookware, while clever corner units maximise tricky spaces.’

How To Maximise Space

Speaking of tricky areas, the design process might feel particularly daunting if you haven’t got much square footage at your disposal – but it’s all about storage

‘Maximise storage with smart solutions like pull-outs and tower units that combine appliances,’ says Bally. ‘Consider taller wall units and integrated appliances for a streamlined look, and don’t underestimate the power of good lighting: under-cabinet and plinth lighting can make a huge difference by opening up the room and creating a more spacious, airy feel.’

How To Strike A Balance Between Trendy & Timeless

It’s a tale as old as time: how do you nail those all-important trends while ensuring that nothing goes out of style?

‘This year, natural materials and earthy tones are trending: for a luxurious touch, deep forest greens, gold accents and chocolate browns are key,’ states Bally. ‘Stay ahead of the curve with reeded panelling like our Natura range, which is available in two finishes: Dawn, for a light, airy feel, and Dusk, for a rich, sophisticated look. The oak veneer frontals add warmth, while the panels are perfect for open shelving. To complete the look, integrate smart appliances for a seamless, functional kitchen design.’

While modern, earthy finishes might be all the rage, one distinct look is just as popular: shaker kitchens.

‘Classic shaker kitchens in neutral tones like bone or sage green never go out of style,’ Bally confirms. ‘They provide a timeless base that you can easily update with accessories and soft furnishings.’

How To Organise Your Kitchen Cabinets & Drawers

No matter which kitchen style you choose, one component is crucial: clear worktops. (Also known as the invisible kitchen look.)

To ensure your worktops are uncluttered and your drawers are perfectly organised, Bally suggests integrating your appliances. ‘This will help you achieve a sleek and seamless look,’ she explains. ‘A boiling water tap can free up valuable counter space, for example, and an under-mounted single-bowl sink allows the drainer to double as a prep area. For larger appliances like washing machines and dishwashers, matching the front panels to the rest of your cabinetry will keep appliances discreetly hidden.’
