Whether you love or dread the autumn period, it’s easy to mourn the loss of the sunshine as October begins – and if autumn decor isn’t quite your style, why not keep summer alive with some Marbella-inspired interiors?

According to Luisina Marchiori, interior designer for Homerun Brokers, Marbella style is all about understated luxury. ‘It’s subtle and modern, and it also remains true to its Mediterranean roots, which is why earthy colours and sturdy materials are implemented to achieve a rustic, Spanish look.’

Below, Luisina sharea four handy ways to replicate Marbella interiors. Read on for some inspiration…

Take Advantage Of Colours That Enhance Natural Light

Think of the Mediterranean and you’ll likely picture terracotta walls and earthy accents, but Luisina suggests using lighter shades as your base. ‘As shorter days draw in, homes can often feel dark and small. By using a colour palette of beige and soft greys on your walls, you can help reflect the daylight, making your space feel bigger,’ she explains.

From here, you can start to add ‘warm, earthy tones through both soft and hard furnishings. Take it a step further by adding a SAD lamp to replicate that warm Spanish light and banish those winter blues,’ Luisina continues.

Focus On Natural, Good Quality Materials

‘Blending natural materials (such as wood and handcrafted ceramics) with contemporary elements (like glass and steel) ensures a seamless and effortless mix of Mediterranean rusticism and slick modernity,’ says Luisina. You can also level up your space using handwoven fabrics like cotton and linen.

Use Nature As A Source Of Decor Inspiration

‘Earthy browns can emulate Marbella’s fertile ground, but the glistening blue Mediterranean Sea and its coastal vegetation are also pillars of inspiration,’ Luisina muses. ‘Deep blues and soft greens are ideal for cushions and accessories.’

Of course, no Mediterranean space is complete without plants, and Luisina suggests choosing ‘potted hibiscuses, cacti, or succulents like aloe vera, which are common in Marbella and require little maintenance (although hibiscus needs a lot of water and light.) Small potted olive trees can also grow indoors during the winter, which is great for larger spaces, while eucalyptus and rosemary are great additions to your bathroom.’

Don’t Forget Sensory Elements

Finish off your space using the power of scent: think ‘fresh fragrances like citrus or lavender – both abundant in Marbella thanks to the region’s orange trees and lavender fields – which can replicate a heady summer’s day,’ says Luisina. ‘Harvest any lavender you may have growing in your garden and let it dry out before placing it in small bowls or muslin pouches.’ If you’re after a more coastal feel, meanwhile, ‘marine notes such as sea salt or driftwood can be brought into your home through scented candles or diffusers.’
