From gorgeous green to puffball seats
There’s nothing like the New Year to make you suddenly want to declutter your home, paint the walls a new colour, and generally revamp your life. If the living room is your first project, many interior designers might say that it starts with the perfect sofa – and we’ve rounded up all the sofa trends we can expect to see in 2025.
Top Sofa Trends For 2025
Puffball Seating
From scalloped edges to curvaceous chairs, the wavy look has dominated interiors in the past few years, and the latest iteration? Curved, cloudlike puffball seating.
‘Any good sofa should be comfortable, but a really great piece is a form of sculptural artwork in its own right, setting the tone for the entire room,’ says Jeremy Spencer, co-founder of Vabel. ‘Legendary seating like Ligne Roset’s timeless Togo sofa has a striking form which works beautifully in open plan spaces, where typically you see a sofa from all angles.’
A puffball sofa, then, is both functional and stylish. Samuel Pye, creative director of Echlin, notes that ‘people are drawn to puffball seating as it cleverly combines comfort with interest and playfulness.’ This guarantees a spectacular focal point for any room: ‘The way the natural light hits the soft curves and split sections of the iconic Franco Ferri Sacai modular sofa, for example, provides a lot more depth and play with shadows than a standard sofa,’ he continues.
Modular Furniture
Many sofas (puffball-style included) aren’t simply practical, but adaptable, too – and modular pieces like these are a notable sofa trend in 2025. ‘As we become increasingly conscious of our long-term investments, modular sofas are set to dominate in 2025,’ explains Monika Puccio, interior expert at Sofa Club. ‘Their adaptability accommodates various living spaces and evolves with personal lifestyle changes, offering flexibility that some traditional designs cannot match.’
‘Modular furniture systems are redefining how we use our living rooms, allowing spaces to effortlessly transition between work, relaxation, and entertaining,’ adds Jethro Huie, Principal Designer and Founder of Huie Designs. Whether you’re short of space or itching to turn your spare room into both a lounge and a guest bedroom, modular furniture could be the key.
Bouclé
No Instagrammable living room is complete without a chic bouclé piece, but this trendy staple is getting a revamp in 2025.
‘Bouclé has long been a popular fabric thanks to the viral white boucle accent chair,’ notes Joana Sadovskaja, interior trends expert at Lovesofas. Its popularity is set to continue, but with a twist: vibrant colours. ‘Expect bouclé pieces in an explosion of shades, ranging from soft pastels to bold jewel tones. The versatile fabric adds warmth and personality to every space.’
Earthy Tones
We’ve seen it in bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens, and now the earthy look has reached the realm of living room seating. ‘The colour palette for sofas in 2025 is all about evoking a sense of warmth: we’re seeing a resurgence of rich and earthy tones,’ confirms David Harris, design director at Andrew Martin. ‘Think warm reds, deep browns, lush greens, calming blues, and timeless natural hues. These shades not only add a touch of sophistication to a space but also create an inviting atmosphere.’
Green Statement Pieces
If the experts had to pick the most popular earthy shade? Sage green, apparently. ‘Sage green is emerging as a standout colour for 2025, offering a refreshing yet sophisticated hue that complements both modern and traditional interiors,’ says Joana. ‘It’s predicted to be most popular in bouclé and velvet materials. These rich textures enhance the elegance of a room, while the earthy undertones promote tranquillity and relaxation, making it an ideal choice for living rooms and cosy reading nooks.’
When it comes to styling green pieces, consider creamy neutrals – or bold jewel tones. ‘Complement sage green sofas and chairs with cream or light-coloured cushions to create a soft, harmonious look, or opt for darker shades such as burgundy for a striking, bold effect,’ advises Joana.
