Design experts give us the rundown

Aside from the ever-beloved pastel shades and the enduring popularity of florals, what’s trending in the interior design world this spring? We asked the experts. These are the biggest spring design trends we’ll see in 2025…
Spring Design Trends For 2025
Sheer Fabrics
Nothing says warm weather like gauzy, floaty fabrics – and according to Hillarys’ trend expert, Victoria Robinson, sheer curtains in soft earthy tones will be everywhere this spring. ‘Choose sheer curtains in soft, natural colours like sage green, sky blue, or sandy beige,’ she advises. ‘These hues bring a calming, earthy feel to your space, enhancing the connection with the outdoors. Sheers are also a great option as the weather improves and you want to let more natural light into your space.’
Stripes
Stripes? For spring? Absolutely, says Sarah McCann, print and product expert at Voyage Maison. ‘Spring has traditionally been a pivotal time for interior changes, and we usually lean on biophilic designs with lighter, natural tones – but this season, patterns will be reimagined,’ she explains. ‘Expect a modern twist and an emphasis on fresh, bold colours. Coloured stripes will be used to contrast with botanical prints like budding blossoms and ripening fruits.’
Pairing stripes and florals might feel like a risky move, but maximalism is all the rage this year, after all. (Just take a look at the pattern drenching trend.) Plus, stripes can actually serve to balance out the rest of your space. ‘A great way to make floral fabrics and wallpaper feel less fussy is to pair them with a geometric wide stripe in a complementary colour,’ confirms interior designer Cinny Aumonier. ‘The structure of the stripe brings a modern aesthetic and prevents the space from feeling too crowded, giving the room space to breathe. Wider stripes, in particular, work wonders in updating vintage or antique furniture pieces.’
Bold Florals
It wouldn’t be spring without some florals, and this year’s take on the trend is bold colours and oversized patterns; Sarah suggests ‘detailed floral wallpaper with bigger, bolder prints on sofa cushions and lampshades.’
‘From wallpapers to upholstery, large-scale botanical prints add a touch of nature and vibrancy to interiors,’ adds Johanna Constantinou, interior trends expert at Tapi Carpets & Floors. For a less maximalist approach, pair them with neutrals rather than other prints: ‘The key to incorporating bold botanicals is balance,’ she explains. ‘Bring them in alongside neutral backgrounds and minimalist decor to help them remain an accent rather than an overwhelming feature. Alternatively, you can experiment with botanical-themed rugs and textured carpets for a functional design.’
Plaid
While florals are a spring classic, plaid is a trend that you might not have expected to grace our homes this year.
‘Plaid has made a strong return in both muted and vibrant colourways for spring 2025,’ says Debbie Leigh, design manager at ILIV. ‘To bring the look into your interiors, try introducing tartan throws or even upholstered plaid armchairs. For a more modern take and a definite feel, mix unexpected colours like soft lilac or sage with the traditional plaid pattern.’
Fringing & Frills
When it comes to adding texture and visual interest to a space, fringing and frills are set to be a go-to. ‘Tassels and fringing add playful movement and a sense of fun, perfect for creating a vibrant, stylish interior this spring,’ says Debbie. ‘Incorporate fringed cushions for a chic, textural touch, or elevate your space with decorative tassel trims on curtains and lampshades.’
Frills also happen to pair perfectly with stripes. ‘A bold wide striped cushions provides a contemporary base which can be accented with thinner striped frills,’ explains Louisa Tratalos, founder of bespoke fabric studio Colours of Arley. ‘These provide tactility and texture, but the timeless stripes keep them from verging into high-flounce, rustic territory.’
Blue Gingham
With stripes, florals and plaid in the mix, what’s one more charming print? According to the co-founders of Addison Ross, it’s French blue gingham that we’ll be seeing in everyone’s homes this spring.
‘Gingham has made a definite resurgence within interiors,’ they confirm. ‘It’s a unique and versatile pattern: while it exudes a sense of nostalgia, it can also be seamlessly adapted to more modern spaces. It’s surprisingly easy to incorporate into your home, too, whether you style it using upholstered chairs, statement cushions, or table linens.’
It seems that gingham and pastels are the winning combination. ‘Think soft blue table runners paired with crisp white dinnerware, perfectly finished with a gingham serving trays or placemats,’ the Addison Ross team suggests. ‘We particularly love how gingham can bring both structure and softness to a room.’
