Cottagecore, reimagined

From maximalist style to quirky homeware, there are plenty of ways to bring a touch of whimsy to your interiors (without necessarily succumbing to the chaos of the frazzled English woman aesthetic). The latest trend? Storybook kitchens. Here’s the rundown.

The English Storybook Kitchen Trend, Explained

Cottagecore kitchens may have been around for what seems like forever, but when it comes to rustic charm, there’s a new trend emerging: storybook kitchens. It shakes up the classic cottage look with the help of a major dose of nostalgia.

‘The English storybook kitchen is a nostalgic, romantic aesthetic inspired by rural life,’ explain the experts at Plank Hardware. ‘It takes inspiration from children’s literature and cosy cottages, incorporating plenty of whimsical details.’

So, how do you get the storybook look? It all starts with the colour palette. Think ‘soft colours and pastel hues like sage green, lavender, and cream,’ says the Plank Hardware team. ‘Natural materials are also a must – wood, stone, and rattan give a rustic feel, and this can be softened with textiles and soft fabrics like linen, cotton, and wool to create a sense of comfort and warmth.’

To nail the nostalgia factor, incorporate ‘vintage finds, floral patterns and antique finishes,’ they continue. ‘Gingham accents, bobbin detailing and cafe curtains’ also make the perfect additions to any cottagecore-inspired kitchen.

Finish things off touches of greenery, brass accents and a bit of quirky kitchenware, and the perfect storybook kitchen suddenly comes to life. It’s the start of a new chapter…
