The most overlooked room in the house? Not anymore…
Powder rooms and guest bedrooms might be the unsung heroes of the home, but there’s one space that really does fly under the radar: the utility room. If you’re struggling to make yours both functional and stylish, look no further – we’ve rounded up some of the best (and the simplest) utility room ideas.
Utility Room Ideas: How To Design A Utility Room You’ll Love
As far as interior design priorities go, you’d be forgiven if the utility room happened to be at the very bottom of your list – if it’s even there at all. Yet while repainting your walls, renovating the kitchen and clearing out the cupboards certainly feel like the more urgent tasks, your utility room is, in fact, brimming with potential.
‘Many people think that utility rooms aren’t worth the effort of painting and decorating, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,’ states Michael Rolland, managing director at The Paint Shed. ‘There are so many colours and techniques that can transform them into a space you’ll actually enjoy.’ Read on for Michael’s top tips on transforming your utility room.

Second Nature
Panelling
‘Panelling has come a long way in the past year or so and is now a firm favourite among DIYers,’ states Michael. ‘In fact, YouTube searches for “wall panel installation” have risen by an impressive 44,344 per cent over the past 12 months.’
For a guaranteed injection of character and personality, panelling is the way to go. ‘It works brilliantly in the utility room – a space that’s so often overlooked,’ Michael confirms. ‘As well as introducing new textures, it also offers the chance to bring in a bit of personal style. I’ve seen a lot of sage green shades used for utility room panelling, and it really brings out that cosy, farmhouse feel that’s proving so popular.’
Colourful Cabinets
Just like adding a pop of colour to a powder room, colour drenching the cabinets in your utility room will totally elevate the space.
‘Painting your utility room cupboards is a brilliant way to experiment with something new in a smaller space like a utility, and it’s actually a straightforward, beginner-friendly DIY project,’ Mixhael explains. ‘When it comes to colours, I’m a big fan of dusky blues; colours like these tie in nicely with that clean feel you get from fresh laundry.’
Open-Front Cupboards
‘Scandi interiors are a major trend in both fashion and home design, and you can channel the aesthetic in small spaces using open-front cupboards,’ Michael tells us. ‘Consider investing in sturdy wooden cupboards or refreshing your existing ones with a quality wood stain.’
The real genius of open-front cupboards, however? They’re sure to minimise mess. ‘Scandi influences help to introduce a minimalist yet personal touch, and open-front cupboards are a particularly great option if you’re looking to cut back on clutter in your utility room,’ says Michael. ‘They encourage you to stay organised while also offering a cosy glimpse into family life.’
Pastel Accents
While traditional utility rooms boast crisp, white interiors, Michael suggests a different approach. ‘I’d recommend steering clear of white – the utility room is a high-traffic area, and white shows stains far too easily. Instead, consider fresh, pastel shades like light blues, muted greens and dusky purples. Sticking to lighter tones in a smaller room will keep the room feeling open and create the illusion of space.’
