Pale blues to help you snooze

Ever wondered whether bedroom paint colours affect how you sleep? Well, we’ve asked an interior designer to give us some answers. These are the best paint colours for creating a calming bedroom, helping to improve your sleep.

Which Paint Colours Help You Sleep?

If you’re looking to transform your sleep routine in the New Year, painting your bedroom likely isn’t a solution that springs to mind – but according to design experts, it could play a bigger role than you might expect.

While colour and sleep aren’t directly related, colours can have a significant impact on our mood and emotions, with low mood negatively affecting our sleep,’ says Joanne Dodsworth, Head of Bedrooms expert at Wren. ‘This is why choosing a colour palette that either calms, soothes, or uplifts you is a key ingredient to the perfect night’s sleep.’

So, which paint colours really can help you sleep? Here’s the rundown.

Blue

Second Nature

‘People associate blue with peace and tranquillity – think skies and cool water,’ says Joanne. ‘Blue is also connected to a feeling of security, which is essential for a good night’s sleep.’

The shade you choose is crucial, however: ‘It’s all about layering tones to keep the room feeling calm and inviting,’ Joanne explains. ‘Stick to pale or muted colours, avoiding anything too bright; these hues evoke energy and alertness, stimulating the mind.’

If you don’t feel like going all out with some cobalt paint on your walls (or wardrobes), you can try ‘soft furnishings such as pillows and throws,’ says Joanne. ‘A blue headboard is a bold design choice which can bring together a soothing space.’

Green

While earthy tones are all the rage this year, the good news is they’re also a brilliant choice if you’re looking for a relaxing bedroom hue.

Green is synonymous with nature, generating a sense of calm,’ Joanne explains. ‘Pairing green with neutral-coloured accents will balance out your bedroom and create an earthy feel, while pairing it with light blues can softly brighten the space for a completely zen atmosphere.’

Neutrals

Don’t fancy committing to colour? ‘Keep it simple with neutrals,’ advises Joanne. ‘Shades like whites, creams and beiges will help create a relaxing vibe in your bedroom.’

To give a neutral room some more visual interest, ‘try layering different shades while incorporating a mix of soft textures,’ she continues.
