The Goldfinch arrives in Scotland
The Fabritius masterpiece that inspired the best selling novel has arrived in Edinburgh

The 17th Century masterpiece The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius, which inspired the best selling novel of the same name by Donna Tartt, has arrived in Edinburgh’s National Galleries of Scotland.
The painting, completed in 1654, is usually housed in The Hague, but is will be displayed in Scotland from tomorrow.
The oil painting, which measures 33.5cm by 22.8cm, shows a chained bird sitting on a perch.
The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius
Tartt’s book tells the story of a young boy who steals the painting from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York following a terrorist attack. The book won the Pulitzer prize in 2014.
Warner Bros Studios have acquired the film rights for the book, and are set to create a movie version of Tartt’s story.
The Goldfinch comes to the UK
The painting, which has been shown in the UK only a handful of occasions to date, will be on display at the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh from this Friday 4 November until 18 December. The is no admission fee to visit.
Other masterpieces worth a visit at the gallery include Cezanne’s Montagne Sainte-Victoire, Jean-Baptiste Simeon Chardin’s A Vase of Flowers and Raphael’s The Holy Family with a Palm Tree.
The gallery is open from 10am-5pm daily, and stays open until 7pm on a Thursday. For more information visit www.nationalgalleries.org.
