The new school year started with a bang in schools across the country
Autumn term started in style at Sevenoaks Prep School, Bede’s Senior and Prep Schools and King’s Ely School.
Sevenoaks Prep Pupils Have A Spring In Their Step
The pupils and staff of Sevenoaks Prep had a mindful, energetic and busy time last week as they enjoyed two days of activities focused on our Health and Wellbeing. There were talks about our nutrition from The Health Boost along with smoothie tasting at break time, and Hannah from the Little Thoughts Blog spoke about the importance of a healthy mindset.
There were also tai chi, crossfit, yoga, zumba, multi-sports, crossfit, ultimate frisbee and core strength conditioning classes, all of which helped our school community understand better how to be healthy in mind and body.
All pupils took part in a mindful walk through Knole Park and Romshed Farm told us all to ‘eat grass’ and appreciate the importance of healthy farming practices on our environment and personal wellbeing.
Bede’s Boarders Celebrate With A Colour Run
On Sunday 2nd September, boarders from across the Bede’s community came together to take part in a Colour Run at Bede’s Senior School.
The event welcomed pupils from all boarding houses – Camberlot, Crossways, Dorms, Dorter, Stud and Meads End (Prep School) – as part of the pupils’ induction into life at Bede’s.
Alex Murphy, Dorter Housemistress, said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for all the boarders to settle into the School environment, build relationships with their fellow pupils from across the boarding community, and – of course – have fun! This is the first time we have hosted an event for all boarders across the Senior and Prep Schools, and this was so well received that we hope to host many more of these events in the future.’
Durston House School Learn Study Skills
Durston House kicked off the year with a focus on Study Skills. Education at Durston is shaped by a boy’s development of character, curiosity to learn and discover more, and his expanding capability. Linking with their concept of the ‘3 C’s’, the school feel that study skills is an area where the boys are never too young to start to understand how they learn and how they could use this knowledge to improve. It also links with mental health, which is hugely important.
With this in mind, the whole school got involved in participating in two days’ worth of fun, interactive assemblies and activities. These included the topics: Growth Mind-set, Instructions, Organisation, Learning Styles, Presentation and Mindfulness. The PE and Games Department also produced special lessons focusing on the idea that a healthy body equals a healthy mind.
The school then invited the parents to a special event focusing on memory techniques, with over 150 attending. Study Skills will be revisited throughout the year, especially in the run up to exam season. Durston hopes that developing pupil study skills and therefore their approach to learning, will ultimately have a positive impact both on results and the overall mental health of their boys.
