It was Peter Pan, but not like we know it…
A cast of 80 11 to 14-year-olds from Christ’s Hospital staged an adaptation J.M Barrie’s classic tale. The modern day-version of the story is a new adaptation by Ella Hickson entitled Wendy and Peter Pan. Hickson script brings the character of Wendy more into focus. As director Zoe Munday explains, Wendy is ‘more adventurous and brave and won’t conform to the stereotypical female role portrayed in the original story.’
The show was completely sold out and ran for three nights. Over 300 local primary school children came to see the sold-out run of Wendy and Peter Pan at Christ’s Hospital.
Jamira Nelson and Titus Dempsey wowed the audiences on the Thursday and Friday night as Wendy and Peter. Ella Perris and Tristan Berry – both new students to the school – took ownership of the roles on the Saturday.
Other notable roles included the gutsy Tinkerbell, played by Hannah Chujor and Izzy Foster, and Georgie Catt who provided light entertainment as Smee next to Emmanuel Odujebe’s terrifying Captain Hook aboard their ship.
For director of drama John Johnson, ‘one character, in particular, stole the show. A character with no lines and who made an appearance on stage all of three or four times; the crocodile played by Tom Slater. The audience roared with laughter when upon chasing Captain Hook, he took one look over his shoulder to the audience as if to say ‘he’s such a drama queen’ that had the audience in hysterics every time!’
The ensemble also lit up the stage, and were vital to the flying moments in the play. At the beginning of the play, Peter’s ‘eight’ shadows lift him up in the air and, aided by sound and moving lights, create the first illusion of flight.
Next in the pipeline, is a senior production of The Crucible and the junior production of The Lion King.
