On 23 March Cottesmore School, Sussex, unveiled a ground breaking prep school ‘e-sport tournament’ on FIFA 20.
With COVID-19 cancelling all sporting fixtures for the remainder of the Easter Term, this digital tournament invites all local prep schools that Cottesmore would typically face on the playing fields to an online eight-stage knockout FIFA tournament. The children will now compete live with other prep schools on days when sporting fixtures would ordinarily take place.
With the introduction of this digital e-sport tournament, Cottesmore hopes its pupils will maintain the sense of camaraderie and healthy competition with other prep schools in the county, as well as learning and socialising with their peers while enhancing a team building ethos. Naturally, it is preferable for children to learn these skills outside on the sports pitches, but needs must when the devil drives, and it is far better for these essential skills to be discovered, regardless of how or where.
This is a sentiment shared by Tom Rogerson, headmaster at Cottesmore School: ‘Much of what makes Cottesmore great lies within the confines of our grassy, chalked-lined fields and fluttering corner flag,’ he explains. ‘But we really must move with the times, especially at the moment. We all have a responsibility to be creative.’
