What we did on our Easter School Trips

School House rounds up some of the best Easter school trips taken by preps and seniors this year, from creative writing Wales to choral concerts in Malta.

The Easter holidays provide independent schools across the country with the opportunity to go the extra mile to learn something new. From carol services in Malta to rowing in Portugal, pupils have kickstarted the new term equipped with new skills, along with tales of their travels.

Easter school trips

Repton School in Iceland

Iceland is a popular destination for any school geography department. It is the land of ice and fire, after all. Repton School geographers roamed across great swathes of the country’s dramatic landscape, which is characterised by waterfalls, geysers and volcanoes. Caving, hiking and recreating the infamous Icelandic clap were all on the agenda, as well as a well-earned rest in the warm waters of the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa located in a lava field.

RGS Guildford in Italy

Junior classics scholars from RGS Guildford invaded Italy this Easter for its ancient sites.

Oratory School and Queen Anne’s Caversham in Portugal

Pupils in the The Oratory School and QAS Caversham boat clubs were given the unique opportunity to train on a championship rowing lake in Montemor o Velho, Portugal.

Bedales in Russia

Bedales Easter School Trips

A select group of 22 Bedales historians braced themselves for the cold and set off for Russia over the Easter break. The group visited started in Moscow, a city of ancient history and modern influence, touring the Kremlin and visiting parts of the Grand Palace that are usually off limits.

In St Petersburg, the group went on an artistic tour of State Hermitage Museum, and reflected on the role of the city in the revolution with a visit to the Political History Museum. Not forgetting the infamous site where Rasputin was murdered – the sumptuous Yusopov Palace.

The group experienced the full range of Russian culture in the evenings from watching the traditional folkshow – with special guest star, student Orlando Goffin – to attending a production of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty in the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St Petersburg.

Summer Fields in Malta

Many people will have sung in chorus on Easter Sunday in their local church, but boys at Summer Fields, Oxford, travelled a little further – singing to an audience in Malta.

Christ College Brecon in France

Immersing yourself in a different culture is probably the best way to improve language skills. And that’s exactly what French sholars at Christ College Brecon did, journeying to their language school, Langues Sans Frontieres in Montpellier, for holiday tutorials.

Cranleigh Prep in Wales and Switzerland

Many esteemed writers have been inspired by the Welsh countryside. Following in their footsteps were upper school pupils from Cranleigh Prep. Based at the National Writing Centre of Wales, Ty Newyyd, which is nestled in the foothills of Snowdonia National Park, the group spent a week by the seaside, writing a range of poetry and prose, guided by author Tiffany Murray and poet Peter Sansom.

Meanwhile in Switzerland, staff and pupils opted for more fast-paced activities – skiing down the slopes of the Arosa ski resort.
