Today we report on a particularly impressive achievement from one up-and-coming athlete

If you’re anything like us at Country and Town House, you’ve been glued to the screen watching Team GB compete at this year’s Olympics, hosted in Paris. But have you ever paused to consider how one gets to such a position? The necessary steps one must climb in order to ascend to the highest level of one’s chosen sport?

Hugo Mayes of the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook, Suffolk doesn’t have to wonder. He knows. ‘My hockey role model is Nick Bandurak’, he says. ‘[Bandurak] plays as a forward for Holcombe and the England and Great Britain national teams; I like watching him play, as he is always in the right place at the right time.’

That’s his sport, by the way: hockey. Why? ‘I enjoy how fast and smooth-flowing the game is, along with the skill involved’, says Hugo. And skilled he is – despite the fact that he’s only in Year 8, Hugo has been selected to join the prestigious and highly selective Anglian Eagles hockey squad. The highest level of hockey for his age range in the entire east of England, this is no small achievement, and Hugo credits his success in part to the support given by the Royal Hospital School: ‘RHS has helped me via the TPG training sessions that focus on enhancing the muscles used for the specific sport.’

For its part, the Royal Hospital School couldn’t be prouder. ‘This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to Hugo’s dedication, skill, and passion for the sport,’ says Nick Platt, Director of Sport at RHS. ‘We are incredibly proud of him and confident that he will continue to excel and represent our school with distinction. Hugo’s selection is not only a personal triumph but also an inspiration to his peers, demonstrating what can be achieved through hard work and commitment. We look forward to supporting him in his journey with the Anglian Eagles and celebrating his future successes.’

Certainly one to watch in the future!
