International Women’s Day At St Columba’s College

This coming Saturday – that’s the 8th March – is International Women’s Day. The holiday has a fascinating history – the brainchild of American labour activist, suffragist and educator Theresa Malkiel in 1909, it was actually none other than Vladimir Lenin who attached it to the current March 8th date in 1922. The United Nations promoted it as a mainstream global holiday in 1977 and the rest, as they say, is history.
St Columba’s College isn’t one to miss out on the action – that’s why it’s hosting its inaugural St Columba’s College International Women’s Day event on Thursday 6th March. Hosted by Katie Marson, Deputy Head, the event will begin with coffee and pastries, before moving on to talks from a selection of exciting and auspicious speakers at the top of their respective fields. This includes Deryanne Todd, owner and founder behind The Dressing Room, an award-winning fashion boutique; Nicola Elllul, Head of Fundraising for Look Good Feel Better, a leading cancer support charity; and Daisy Cooper MP, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats.
‘We are delighted,’ says Karl Guest, Headmaster, ‘to share the opportunity to listen and learn from the vast amount of experience and expertise of our guest speakers who are all leading women in their industries.’
‘We are grateful to them for giving up their time to inspire our young people and wider members of our community.’
