On February 3 the Berkhamsted School’s Modern Languages Department hosted a public reading competition in Deans’ Hall in an excellent showcase of the linguistic ability of its pupils.
Forty-eight individuals from Years 7 to 13 made it through inter-class and best-in-year rounds to progress to the final, where they read from a variety of short texts that allowed them to further practise and display their linguistic skills. An all-star judging panel of language teachers was present to make the tricky decision of choosing the final winners.
French, Spanish and Mandarin texts from a range of writers including Victor Hugo, Pablo Neruda and Xu Zhimo featured as the pupils read with great confidence and plenty of skill. The event was not only an excellent way for pupils to develop their ability in their chosen language, but also provided a great opportunity for them to develop their public speaking skills and confidence.
Congratulations to the winners and to all who were involved in what was a very successful event.
