Farnborough Hill girls made sure their voices were heard at the Rotary Youth Speaks final
The Farnborough Hill‘s team speech on social media secured them a win at the 2017 Rotary Youth Speaks competition.
The public speaking contest sees teams from hundreds of schools enter each year at intermediate and senior levels. The Farnborough Hill team, comprising Roisin Royle, Catriona Flesher and Imogen Usherwood, represented local rotary clubs Farnborough and Farnborough Weyside District in the contest.
Public speaking is a thriving extra-curricular activity at the school and is run by coach and English Speaking Union Guildford and District branch chairperson, Lori Winch-Johnson. ‘Students at Farnborough Hill seem to relish constructing an argument and researching a topic for presentation and have excellent communication skills,’ Ms Winch-Johnson explained. ‘It is a pleasure to coach them.’
Several senior members of Rotary International visited the Farnborough Hill to award the trophy. They then observed the winning students’ public speaking prowess in a school-wide masterclass.
Chairman Roisin Royle, speaker, Catriona Flesher, and vote of thanks, Imogen Usherwood spoke about the actual sociability of social media entitled ‘There’s nothing social about social media’. The team follow in the footsteps of the Rotary Youth Speaks’ 2012 winners, also from Farnborough School.
The girl’s insightful discussion of a topic so relevant to their own experience held the entire student body’s attention. ‘The whole school community is proud of the girls,’ says head Mrs Alex Neil. ‘They are wonderful role models to the younger students.’
