The school handed over a cheque of £12,000 to a children's medical research charity
The Royal Masonic School for Girls community have raised a record-breaking £12,000 for Sparks, which funds medical research into cures for children’s diseases.
It has been a bumper year of fundraising at RMS, with a ride range of events held in aid of charity.
The campaign to raise funds for Sparks was spearheaded by deputy head girls Katie Bennett and Hannah Roberts, who organised bake sales, non-uniform days, quiz nights and a make up masterclass. They also asked girls from Years 7 to 9 to take on the ‘£2 challenge’, whereby each girl was given £2 and tasked with ‘growing’ this through fundraising events during their Easter holiday. A large number of girls managed to raise over £100, with one student raising £208.
Record-breaking sum
Hannah and Katie had set the school a stretching target of £10,000, so were delighted to unveil the final total of £12,ooo at an assembly attended by a member of the Sparks fundraising team.
Never before had this amount of money been raised by deputy heads of charities at the school. Katie said of the achievement: ‘We must say that the greatest reward of all is knowing that this year’s efforts are being put towards such a worthwhile charity, Sparks. It is wonderful to know that this money will go towards helping to fund the research behind some of the rare diseases that currently affect the lives of thousands of children in the UK on a daily basis.’
Headmaster Kevin Carson added, ‘We are delighted to have been able to raise such a significant sum for Sparks. Hannah and Katie have worked tirelessly towards this goal, and we are very proud of their efforts, as well as the generosity of the RMS community as a whole.’
