Royal Visit to Haberdashers’ Monmouth School Marks Historic New Chapter

Haberdashers’ Monmouth School celebrated a major milestone today as His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the school as a fully co-educational institution. The visit highlighted the school’s commitment to cutting-edge education, supported by world-class facilities and the longstanding connection to the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. 

Upon arrival at the William Jones Campus, His Royal Highness was greeted by a Guard of Honour from the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and enthusiastic flag-waving students. The Duke was met by Simon Dorman, Executive Head, Lord Moynihan (Chair of Governors), Rupert Elliot (Master of Haberdashers), alongside other distinguished guests. 

The Duke of Edinburgh began his tour with a visit to the Design and Textiles classroom, where Sixth Form students showcased their creative projects. He then proceeded to the Year 8 Design Technology Computer Room, engaging with students as they demonstrated their skills in design and engineering. 

At the Blake Theatre, The Duke of Edinburgh enjoyed a drama performance by students and unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the official opening of the fully co-educational school. The ceremony was followed by a musical performance from the school’s students. 

Following the plaque unveiling, HRH joined staff, students, and dignitaries for a buffet lunch, where he was seated between Head Boy Toby Crewe-Read and Head Girl Arabella Chowns. During the meal, he commended the school’s forward-thinking approach and dedication to education. 

The Duke’s visit concluded with a walk to the Sports Pavilion, crossing the iconic River Wye alongside sustainability students. During the walk, the students shared their efforts to raise awareness and campaign for environmental sustainability within the school and the wider community. Upon reaching the pavilion, His Royal Highness took time to watch the girls and boys during rugby training sessions, showing an interest in the school’s sporting activities and outstanding facilities. 

Executive Head Simon Dorman remarked, ‘It was a privilege to welcome His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, to mark this new chapter in our school’s history. His enthusiasm for the students’ work and his appreciation for our modern facilities was truly inspiring. This visit underlines our commitment to innovation in education, ensuring our students are ready for the challenges of the future.’  

The Duke’s visit reinforced the strong ties between Haberdashers’ Monmouth School and the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, whose support continues to offer students exceptional opportunities and access to a broad network of mentors and industry leaders.
