Pupils were inspired by the Ham Wall nature reserve

Lower-sixth BTEC art students from Millfield worked with pupils from Elmhurst Junior School for a joint art project during the summer term.

Millfield Art Project

The exchange programme is one of the many local community initiatives that forms a part of Millfield’s sixth-form programme.

Millfield joined Elmhurst on a visit to RSPB Ham Wall in Shapwick for artistic inspiration. There they learnt about the landscape and took photographs and sketches of the wildlife. This formed the basis of the artwork they would create back at Millfield over a series of visits.

The pupils from Elmhurst created both individual mosaic tiles of scenes from Shapwick Moor and monoprints based on sketches and fallen foliage. Elmhurst’s completed artwork is now displayed in Millfield’s own onsite gallery, as part of the Summer Show exhibition.

The Summer Show at the Atkinson Gallery, which features work selected from local artists the South West, is currently open to the public until the 4 August. Over the years, the gallery has shown work by art world stars such as sculptor Marc Quinn and photojournalist Don McCullin.
