The Curriculum
Downsend School delivers a dynamic and future-focused curriculum that nurtures curiosity, academic excellence, and a lifelong love of learning. Designed to equip pupils with the skills they need to thrive in an ever-evolving world, our approach emphasises critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, and digital literacy. Through real-world learning experiences, collaboration, and problem-solving, we inspire independence and resilience, ensuring every child is prepared to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the future with confidence. Our Future Skills vision underpins every aspect of learning, empowering pupils to think beyond the classroom and develop the essential skills for lifelong success.
Games & The Arts
Downsend believes in an active and balanced education, with Sport and the Arts playing a central role in school life. Our exceptional sports facilities, including an on-site swimming
pool, extensive playing fields, and specialist coaching, enable pupils to thrive in a variety of team and individual sports. We are proud of our consistent success in national competitions, reflecting the dedication and talent of our students.
The arts are equally celebrated at Downsend, with our flagship Creative Arts Centre providing a dynamic space for drama, music, and artistic expression. Here, pupils bring their talents to life through plays, recitals, and exhibitions, with standout performances including the ever-popular Downsend Rocks! – a highlight of the school calendar. From instrumental lessons to theatrical productions, creativity is nurtured and showcased at every opportunity.
Pastoral Care
A warm, nurturing environment ensures every child feels valued and supported at Downsend. Our small class sizes allow teachers to develop strong relationships with pupils, fostering confidence, wellbeing, and personal growth. Wellbeing initiatives including a comprehensive pastoral tracking system, dedicated pastoral staff, and a focus on emotional intelligence help pupils develop resilience and positive relationships. Digital wellbeing is also a priority, with a responsible approach to technology use embedded in school life.
