The Curriculum

Hurtwood House is famous for being both wonderfully creative and rigorously academic. Drama, Media, Art, Photography, Textiles and Music are quite simply a way of life, but Hurtwood also offers a wide range of traditional A Level subjects including Science, Mathematics, Psychology, Business, Economics, Languages, History and Geography. Our students also excel in the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) which they can take alongside their A-Levels.

Games & The Arts

Often described as ‘the most exciting school in England’, Hurtwood enjoys a reputation of having the best creative departments in the country. The performing arts department is a standout feature and the extra-curricular Drama on offer is breathtaking. The school spends £100,000 each year on the annual 10 night Christmas musical, which is just one of over 40 productions a year at the school including everything from rock concerts to Shakespeare. For those interested in filmmaking, Hurtwood is the only place to be. The school has impressive facilities including an industry standard TV studio, kitted out with the latest cameras and cutting-edge postproduction facilities and editing suites.

Pastoral Care

Students share study bedrooms with one or two others. We have six boarding houses – four are co-educational and two are single-sex – each with a housemaster or housemistress and a team of house tutors.

University Places

Each year our students achieve entry to their chosen universities including Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial College, the London College of Fashion and RADA.

Head Teacher’s Philosophy

‘I have an unashamedly idealistic and passionate view of education. I want what all parents want for their children – that they should be inspired and motivated by gifted teachers in an environment which is stimulating, happy and safe. I believe that after GCSE many students are ready for the fresh impetus provided by a community of their peers, and I believe that the sixth-form years can be as dynamic and exciting as university itself.’

Outstanding Characteristics

– Top of the co-ed boarding school league table for the last five years.
– The biggest and best theatre and media studies departments in England with superb professional facilities.
– A public school which is refreshingly different and hugely successful. Uniquely, our 300 boarding students join us after GCSE when ready for a fresh challenge.
– Less formal and less institutional than traditional public schools, Hurtwood makes the A-Level experience as exciting and rewarding as going away to university.
