Wendy Rowe shows us how to embrace the natural makeup trend for autumn.

As the temperature drops, and our skin loses its sun-kissed glow, we need a little added help from our makeup. While it’s tempting to layer up on foundation, why not try something a little more subtle and natural this autumn? After all, less is more. Embrace your natural skin and add a little glow to battle any evidence of winter face (as coined by Alexa Chung and Lisa Eldridge in this beauty video).

This year, we’ve been through it all makeup-wise. From the contouring obsession, to laid back beauty and natural, organic brands having a moment, we seem to have gone full circle. The recent catwalk collections showcased a natural and bare faced beauty for S/S’17, but we can’t help but want to wear the look now.

Take the popularity of the cult beauty brand Glossier. Created after the success of Into The Gloss, Emily Weiss’s beauty blog, the brand prides itself on being ‘a beauty company inspired by what girls need in real life. We’re creating the new essentials: easy-to-use basics that form the backbone to your unique beauty routine’.

How very modern. With a collection of essential and instagrammable skincare and makeup sets, all reasonable priced, it’s no wonder they are such a success.

Organic and natural beauty is having a moment too. Thanks to RMS Beauty, the creator of the organic beauty hit Living Luminizer – a natural highlighter, organic beauty is no longer has any stigma surrounding it. Recently, Wendy Rowe the international makeup artistic and beauty creative director for Burberry, hosted a natural beauty brunch, celebrating brands like RMS Beauty for their gentle and healing properties. Lisa Eldridge also featured a makeup video using only natural makeup products including RMS Beauty, ILIA and Kjaer Weis.

How to get the look from Wendy Rowe

Burberry S/S '17 Beauty Catwalk

Wendy Rowe created very natural makeup for Burberry’s September’ 16. As ‘the master of nudes’ she favours this makeup look, ‘My aesthetic when it comes to beauty is all about working with the individual, working with their features and their skin to bring out their own unique beauty. For me, it’s important to enhance the skin so that you still see it and it looks the best it can.’

Its all about using the right products and textures. Burberry’s products make it very achievable to create amazing nude makeup; the textures are lightweight but yet they still cover where you need them to and you can still feel the skin. Glossier do some great products for younger people – they are very light and easy to use. RMS’ products, particularly their cream highlighter and concealers, are good – plus they are also organic. With this sort of makeup it’s all quite light, nothing should make a massive statement.

At Burberry the look was focusing on each model’s individuality, blurring the lines between masculine and feminine as Virginia Woolf’s Orlando does.

My favourite products for creating a gorgeous nude look are Burberry’s Fresh Glow Foundation, Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base and their Contour Pen. For brows, Glossier’s Boy Brow and Burberry’s Effortless Eyebrow Definer are great and for highlighter, I like RMS’s cream as it works well with the natural tone of the skin and doesn’t look obvious. I have actually broken the nude look down into sections covering skin, contour and highlighter as well as eyes & eyebrows, lips & cheeks so check out my website for more detailed information on how to get it right.

Put down the mascara. One of the key beauty trends from S/S’17 is beautiful minimal makeup, dewy skin and full face framing brows. If you can’t face the lack of definition, use some brown eyeliner to help define the eyes, and curl your lashes. Just look at the makeup from Lanvin, Isabel Marant, Giambattista Valli, Prada, Chloe, Vera Wang, Stella McCartney and more for catwalk inspiration…

Laura Mercier’s natural take on makeup has given her a host of famous fans worldwide. According to her, the key to ‘non-touring’ is to focus ‘on a natural, dewy complexion and strategic highlights on areas of the face to create subtle shape. Skin looks fresh and lightly strobed’, as is seen on Aimee Song below.

The whole idea of non-touring is to simplify the lengthy contouring process we saw at the beginning of the year to create something much more natural and youthful.

So this autumn, bare all – well nearly.
