The designer is stepping down from Mother of Pearl

It seems that change is in the air for the fashion industry, what with numerous brands – including MITHRIDATE and Dior Homme – announcing new artistic direction within days of each other. And now the latest name to join the list is Amy Powney, who announced earlier today that she will be stepping down from her role as creative director at Mother of Pearl to focus on a new brand: AKYN.

About Amy Powney’s Upcoming Label AKYN

Designer Amy Powney served her last day at Mother of Pearl last week. Powney, who has been at the brand for over 19 years, will now take on the title of Creative Director and partner of new label AKYN. Her team have described the change as an opportunity for the designer to ‘use her voice and expertise on a wider scale, creating deeper impact and striving for continued and meaningful change within the industry.’

Powney has long been an advocate for more sustainable modes of creation within the fashion industry. As well as a brand ambassador for TENCEL™ – the flagship brand under The Lenzing Group that covers textile specialty product fibber offerings that are wood based, biodegradable and derived from sustainably managed trees and renewable wood sources – the designer has also previously opened the door on Mother of Pearl’s supply chain through the film Fashion Reimagined.

‘Creating clothing has become a more thoughtful process for me,’ Powney told C&TH ahead of the film’s release. ‘The amount of respect that you give your fabric after learning about it is tremendous. Think about how many hands touch a metre of fabric before you, the carbon footprint from making it, every process involved. It’s epic.’

When Does AKYN Launch?

Amy Powney is scheduled to launch AKYN in May 2025. Watch this space for more updates. akyn.com
