How Bows Became 2024’s Biggest Trend
Whether teeny tiny or supersized, singular or stacked up, minimal or maximal, bows are everywhere right now. Storming the runways of 2023, the humble ribbon has wound itself tightly around our hearts – strapped to heels, decorating gloves and tied into belts – and it’s showing no signs of letting up any time soon.
The trend, steeped in femininity and playfulness, is a visual culmination in what has been a girl’s year, with TikTok trends like ‘girl math’ and ‘girl dinner’ hinting at a greater shift towards youth-centric trends – and when it comes to fashion, what’s girlier than a big (preferably pink) bow?
While you can get away with sticking a ribbon in your hair or prettily lacing up your blouse, we’re seeing a major focus on larger-than-life sculptural sensations; think massive bows that make up the silhouette of the garment itself.
Another variation on the trend that is predicted to be a hit in 2024 is ‘bow stacking’ – aka, piling on ribbons for a multi-bow look. In the Pinterest Predict 2024 report, the platform highlighted that this strain of the movement will be absolutely everywhere, from clothing and accessories to footwear and jewellery. ‘Millennials and Gen Z will adorn their outfits, shoes, hair and jewellery with this oh-so-delicate detail,’ said Pinterest. ‘Bow large or bow small, next year brings bows for all.’
Or maybe it’s all in the detail for you? Luckily, the bow trend is also making its way through the realms of accessories (hair clips, barrettes and ties), shoes (this is a trend that teams up well with ballet flats and heels) and bags (a glittery bow on a bag à la Self Portrait sounds right up our alley).
