The Country & Town House Responsible Buyers’ Guide
The Louis Vuitton x Murakami Re-Edition Is Here
If there’s one fashion moment that truly defined the early 2000s, it had to be the rainbow-run Louis Vuitton collaboration with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. The original 2004 collection is now to the subject of celebration at the legendary design house, which has just released a re-edition collection for fans to explore.
But wait, what is a re-edition? Unlike a brand new collection, a re-edition presents a line of products that are based on the same artistic inspirations as the original or previous collection. In this case, the Louis Vuitton x Murakami re-edition references the collaboration that was first released 20 years ago.
‘The playful, yet profound works that the artist created for the original collaboration, initiated by the House’s then Artistic Director, Marc Jacobs – including a kaleidoscopic reinterpretation of the iconic Louis Vuitton Monogram pattern [the Monogram Multicolore], the first time in its history that it had been reworked – are now celebrated and featured across a wide-ranging assortment of the House’s most renowned and coveted women’s leather goods and accessories,’ explains Louis Vuitton in an official release.
‘Ultimately, Louis Vuitton x Murakami is defined by the joyful and enduring nature of the original collaboration. The creative bond between Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami continues to transcend both time and stylistic trends, while crossing generations and communities across the world, and offering creations to be collected and cherished – yesterday, today, and forever.’
Collection Highlights
Reimagining and updating pieces from the original collection 20 years ago, Louis Vuitton x Murakami is comprised of over 200 creations – including bags, silk squares, scarves, sunglasses, fashion jewellery, shoes and perfume.
We can expect another explosion of colour this time round too. The re-edition revives the Monogram Multicolore, presenting the pattern’s interlocking LV and floral motifs in 33 different colours on a number of Louis Vuitton’s City Bags, belts, wallets, wedge espadrilles and the signature Rolling Trunk.
Split into two parts, Louis Vuitton x Murakami will be released throughout the year – starting with Chapter One on 1 January 2025.
Chapter One
Kicking off the re-edition, Chapter One presents motifs and characters from the world of Murakami across over 170 of the luxury label’s creations.
As well as the aforementioned accessories (and skateboard), the collaboration also includes a made-to-order Malle Wardrobe containing 33 Louis Vuitton x Murakami Speedy bags. These will be joined by Murakami’s playful Superflat Panda, which finds a home on sneakers, keyrings and a skateboard, as well Superflat Garden characters (think smiley flowers) on a range of perfume bottles.
Chapter Two
The House has hinted that a second chapter of Louis Vuitton x Murakami will launch in March 2025, with a focus on the artist’s cherry blossom pattern. Watch this space.
Will There Be Any Activations?
Yes. To celebrate the arrival of the re-edition collection, the brand plans to launch a ‘fully immersive visual landscape’, spanning window displays, pop-ups, in-store activations and a brand new advertising campaign.
Zendaya Is The Face Of The Louis Vuitton x Murakami Campaign
And who better to represent the collection than woman of the moment Zendaya? The American actor, singer and Louis Vuitton House Ambassador is the star of the campaign, which has been captured by renowned Dutch photographers Inez and Vinoodh.
Wearing items from the collection, Zendaya can be seen interacting with Takashi Murakami’s fun and fantastical artworks created exclusively for the Louis Vuitton × Murakami re-edition, set across spawling cityscapes.
You can catch her wearing a selection of bags – including the All In BB, Speedy 25, OnTheGo, Keepall, and Capucines Mini – as well as Monogram Mules, Bandeau silk scarves and brightly coloured belts in Louis Vuitton leather.
