A Guide To New York Fashion Week SS25

What Is New York Fashion Week?

A focal part of the fashion calendar, New York Fashion Week is a bi-annual event comprised of catwalk shows, showrooms, presentations and events that showcases designers’ collections for the upcoming fashion seasons.

The first ever Fashion Week took place in New York back in 1943, when it was then known as Press Week. Created by publicist Eleanor Lambert, it was originally intended to showcase American fashion during WWII, when French fashion was no longer readily accessible.

The event grew famous pretty quickly, attracting the attention of publications like Vogue, and eventually expanding into Press Week of New York by the mid-1950s. It was during the following decades, in the 60s and 70s, that a number of American heritage designers came to the fore – including Oscar de la Renta, Roy Halston, Diane von Furstenberg and Calvin Klein.

It wasn’t until 1993 that the event became officially known as New York Fashion Week. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) consolidated all of that year’s citywide events into one schedule, creating the event as we know it today.

What Does SS25 Mean?

SS25 stands for spring-summer 2025. The fashion calendar works in a forecasting format, so the shows we see in February are to showcase autumn-/fall-winter collections (AW/FW) and September shows present collections for spring-summer (SS).

The next set of Fashion Weeks will be for AW25.

Does Anna Wintour Go To New York Fashion Week?

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is a regular at New York Fashion Week – so we expect to see her gracing the front row of many shows throughout the SS25 session.

Can Anyone Go?

Sadly not. Most events held during Fashion Week are invite only, and limited to accredited press, celebrities and influencers. However, the format of NYFW has changed for the better since the pandemic, and now most shows are available to watch live and on-demand through the event’s official website.

Can You Stream The Shows?

As mentioned above, New York Fashion Week’s website acts as both an information hub for the week and a streaming platform. You can watch all the shows from the last few seasons, both presentations and catwalk, at nyfw.com

SS25 shows are expected to land on the NYFW website as and when they happen.
