Wrap up in style this season

While the sun may be (intermittently) shining now, it won’t be long before chilly weather sets in for autumn. Lemonade will become hot chocolate, picnics in the park will turn into brisk walks and summer dresses will be traded in for thick, woolly coats. While there’s not much we can do for the first two, we’ve got you covered when it comes to finding the perfect outerwear this season. Purdey has just unveiled its AW23 collection just in time for the temperature drop – and its packed with weather-ready coats, jackets, capes and gilets.

Take A Look Inside Purdey’s AW23 Collection

With the cusp of autumn just within reach, it’s time to start thinking about the extra layers we’ll need to pile on – and if you’re in desperate need of a coat update, you’ve come to the right place. Whether you’ll be spending the cooler months in town or country this year, you can keep your wardrobe looking fresh (and seasonably practical) with the help of British brand Purdey.

While starting out as a gunmaker back in 1814, Purdey has made a name for itself as one of the most luxurious clothing labels in the UK. The brand, known for its heritage designs, has always been conscious of interweaving history and tradition within its newer offerings, bringing out the very best of British craftsmanship across all of its products – and its AW23 collection similarly embodies this ethos.

British tradition makes a home for itself across the collection’s curation of knits, jacket, boots and scarves, namely through this season’s colour palette and textiles – for example, Purdey’s iconic tweeds have been decorated with classic prints like Windowpane and Glen check, houndstooth, herringbone and tattersall.

But it’s arguably Purdey’s new range of field coats, parkas, trenches and capes that steal the show this season. ‘For Autumn/Winter 2023, Purdey has reimagined the very thing for which it has specialised in since clothing was launched in the 1970s – outerwear,’ says Purdey. ‘We are celebrating British craftsmanship in every coat and jacket, fusing together tradition and innovation to produce the highest quality, most luxurious pieces. We have always been known as home of the Field Coat and we wish to continue this history through our exciting new outerwear collection.’

New designs pay homage to Purdey’s rich legacy, with the Field Jacket presenting derivation of its tweed cousins in the Purdey range – this time rendered in loden for men and merino flannel for women – and the Felgate Coat, a British version of the classic duffle, showcasing walnut buttons made from the same wood used for the brand’s gun stocks (and etched with the same checkering mark of Purdey gunmakers). The same can also be said of the Hyde Pea Coat, which alongside a sharp collar and deep pockets showcases the Purdey Scroll motif carved into the domed horn buttons.

Transformational attire plays a big part in the collection too, as seen in the season’s selection of elegant capes. Stitched entirely by hand in wool cashmere, the Double Face Scarf Cape (rendered in a traditional loden Glen check) and the Trench Cape (designed in a rich hazelnut) can easily be adjusted and style however the wearer pleases – giving plenty of wriggle room for personal flair.

As is the case with all of Purdey’s clothing and accessories, the brand also blurs the lines between town and country when it comes to its AW23 outerwear. Here, luxurious textiles and technical finishes collide to create garments that can be worn both for dressy occasions in the city and countryside sporting events. The Ridge Parka and Field Parka put these ideas into practice, as a heritage look crafted from lambswool herringbone gives way to triple-layer waterproofing and performance-wear detailing.

And speaking of performance, sporting influence (both in terms of aesthetics and functionality) also takes centre stage this season, from waterproof and insulating fabrics to prints and textures associated with the countryside. While interwoven throughout the collection, these sporting influences are seen most prominently in the new tailoring line. Details designed to evoke a British sartorial expression are combined with sporty touches – as seen by the hand-tailored Town & Country Coat with its half-raglan cut, or the Duke and Hacking Jackets that have been crafted from lightweight merino cashmere and feature a playful combination of checks as well as leather under collars and ticket pockets (a nod to Purdey’s leather luggage icons).

Other collection highlights from Purdey’s AW23 offering include a selection of cashmere sweaters decorated in chunky cable stitches and earthy tones, oversized scarves that can be wrapped over the shoulders, sturdy leather hiking boots, stylish loafers decked out in vintage patterns and leather luggage essentials designed for ‘a sporting life lived between town and country’.
