Lamenting a flat bob? Not for long. Cue: the 90s supermodel bob

What do the 90s and the bob have in common? Well, for starters, they never go out of style – and when they come together, they create the biggest hair trend of the season: the 90s supermodel bob. Here’s how to get the look.

What Is A 90s Supermodel Bob?

Packed with volume and texture, the 90s supermodel bob takes its cues from the flipped bob – with a dramatic flip giving the cut even more body. Think the length and texture of Christy Turlington’s signature bob combined with Cindy Crawford’s mega bombshell blowout, and you should get an idea of what to expect.

‘It’s a jaw length cut with dramatic layers and a rounded shape, cutting into the cheekbones to exposes the eyes and lips,’ adds Ronnie Berg, a stylist at Nicola Clarke Salon. He also notes that the addition of layers allows for greater lightness, making the flip easier to achieve from every direction.

‘One-length bobs have dominated for a while, but it was only a matter of time before we started to crave change,’ he says. ‘Hair is a vehicle for feeling empowered. With a bob, you can be daring but still cool and sexy. And this look is less effort. It features a more undone texture, but still has impact – giving the wearer freedom to feel confident without dedicating all their time to styling.’

And it’s quickly becoming a staple look amongst celebrities. A way to instantly add volume to short hair, the 90s supermodel bob has been picked up by the likes of Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney, who opt for big, bouncy curls and a tall flip, and more recently by The White Lotus‘ Leslie Bibb, who gives her bob a more subtle lift but still maintains flipped side part.

Who Suits This Cut?

‘Wavy and curly hair always tend to work well with layered cuts,’ says Ronnie. ‘This is also quite an exposing cut when worn short, so those a great neck- or jawline will also find the cut works great for them.’

How To Ask For A 90s Supermodel Bob In The Salon

‘Collect plenty of photo references to show your hairdresser,’ recommends Ronnie. ‘This ensures you’re on the same page. During your consultation you can work out the right length and shape to ensure it suits you.’

How To Style A 90s Supermodel Bob

The cut is also one of the many emerging hairstyles of the season signalling a shift away from ‘fussy’ trends – with less emphasis on styling, and more on the natural texture of the hair itself.

‘For the most part, you can just leave this bob to dry naturally – especially during spring and summer, when it’s hotter,’ says Ronnie. ‘My ethos is: the more relaxed, the better.’

The stylist tells us that only minimal styling is needed, but if volume is a worry (especially for those with fine and thin hair) then you can get a head-start with volumising shampoo and conditioner. You can also apply some styling cream or mousse  to enhance natural curls and movement,’ says Ronnie.

To enhance that flip, you can also blow dry your hair with a round brush. You can dry the hair upside down, brushing the strands when they get closer to being dry, to get a ‘lifted’ look at the roots.

What Next?

‘We’re becoming braver and bolder in cutting our hair again, and trends seem to be heading in the direction of shorter lengths,’ says Ronnie. ‘With this in mind, I can see the 90s supermodel bob evolving into more of a pixie fusion cut .’
