What Is A Bedhead Bob?

‘A bedhead bob is a relaxed, tousled version of the classic bob haircut,’ explains Neale Rodger, Style Director at STIL. ‘It’s all about effortless texture and soft layers – but not your classic layers. You want to incorporate what are known as “invisible layers” to achieve this look, created using texturising scissors and usually cut beneath the haircut rather than on top, like classic layers. This gives that lived-in, slightly undone look, as if you just rolled out of bed and still look chic.’

Expanding on the differences between a classic and bedhead cut, Neale tells us that, ‘Where a traditional bob is often blunt, sleek, and polished, the bedhead bob is intentionally messier. It uses layers or texture to create unruly movement and volume, and it’s styled with loose waves in every direction to give that cool, care-free vibe.’

The trend is also a favourite amongst what Neale calls the internet’s cool girls. ‘I think bedhead bobs are popular at the moment as they fit perfectly with the current trend for low-maintenance, natural styling,’ he says. ‘They also work great on air-dried or slightly waved hair and are ideal for busy routines or those wanting a “cool girl” aesthetic.

‘Hailey Bieber, Alexa Chung and Jenna Ortega have all rocked versions of the bedhead bob recently,’ he continues. ‘It’s especially popular among fashion-forward celebs who lean into that effortless cool look.’

Who Suits This Cut?

Texture is key to nailing this bob, as Neale highlights: ‘This style works best on wavy hair or straight hair with some natural texture, and curls can be adapted but they might need shaping. A chin-length version tends to flatter oval and heart-shaped faces, while slightly longer versions can soften square or round faces.

‘Overall though, this is a super versatile style which everyone can wear,’ he adds. ‘I don’t believe the old school rules apply anymore; you should wear whatever you like, just do it with confidence.’

How To Ask For A Bedhead Bob In The Salon

‘Ask your stylist for a textured bob with soft “invisible” layers to give those shattered ends and a slightly messy finish,’ advises Neale. ‘Bring images of the look you want, and tell them you’re aiming for something low-maintenance with natural movement. I would also be super clear about your usual styling habits, so your stylist can tailor it to you.’

How To Style A Bedhead Bob

While fairly low-maintenance for those with some natural texture, there is a bit of styling required to get the perfect bedhead bob. ‘The best way to style this look would be to air-dry or rough-dry with a diffuser or your fingers, then you want to use tongs to create long, loose, multi-directional waves to build the texture,’ says Neale. ‘Use a texturising spray or sea salt spray to enhance natural movement, then make sure to shake the waves out to create that messy look. Finish with dry shampoo or a matte pomade which are great for boosting volume and creating that perfectly undone finish.’

What Next?

Up next: shaggy, natural layers. ‘I expect this trend to become even more natural with a rise in air-dried styles and longer, shaggier layers blending into the bob,’ forecasts Neale. ‘Think grunge meets elegance. Also, more people might adapt it to curly or coily textures with tailored cuts that honour natural shape.’
