Natural texture takes centre stage
The biggest hair trend for 2025? Natural waves and textures – and the biggest trend on our radar this season is bedhead waves. Here’s how they’re created in the salon.
What Are Bedhead Waves?
‘Bedhead waves are gorgeous, natural-looking waves that are created without a lot of fuss,’ explains Alterna Ambassador Sabrina Dijkman. ‘It’s all about texture and effortless style, with a focus on embracing your hair’s natural texture. Bedhead waves are soft, flowing and full of depth and volume – perfect for an chic carefree look.’
The style comes off the back of 2024’s natural beauty movement, which pushed for less visibly styled hair and makeup looks. ‘Natural-looking hair has gained popularity recently, starting with trends seen on the runways, which primarily featured straight hair,’ adds Sabrina. ‘People are increasingly embracing a more effortless and authentic style that celebrates their natural hair texture and encourages self-expression.’

Bedhead waves, with their loose, relaxed look, fit right in with this trend. ‘Bedhead waves emphasise texture and an easy-going style,’ confirms Sabrina. ‘They create beautiful, natural-looking waves without requiring much effort.’
It’s this low-maintenance quality that Sabrina says makes the hairstyle a winner. ‘The look can be created with minimal heat styling, which is gentler on the hair,’ she tells us. ‘As individuals focus more on hair care and maintaining hair health, this has further contributed to the rise in popularity of this style.’
Who Suits This Cut?
Good news: this seems to be a hairstyle that everyone can get on board with. ‘Bedhead waves are extremely versatile and can suit a wide variety of face shapes, hairstyles and textures,’ confirms Sabrina. ‘It is very adaptable and can work on most hair lengths, making it easier to personalise.’
Although those with a little texture to their hair will have a small advantage here. ‘Bedhead waves do tend to work better on hair that has a natural wave or texture, as it builds on the existing movement,’ says the stylist. ‘For straight, fine hair types, it can be a little trickier to achieve – although not impossible! Adding a texturising product before styling and using a curling wand to create loose, uneven waves can help to create the effortless and tousled effect.’
How To Ask For Bedhead Waves In The Salon
When asking for bedhead waves in the salon, Sabrina recommends coming prepared with reference images. ‘Bringing an image or screenshot of the style for reference is always super helpful – preferably of someone with a similar face shape and hair type to yours,’ she says. ‘This helps the stylist to get a good idea of what you are hoping to achieve, but remember, they are also there to advise on what will work best for your hair.
‘Be sure to mention key descriptors such as soft, tousled, waves with a relaxed finish,’ she adds. ‘This will help to bring the look to life!’
@kristinarodulfo Lately, I’ve been loving lived-in, bedhead wavy “it girl” hair. No one does it better than #BryceScarlett – I was inspired by the hair looks he creates on #MargotRobbie, #KaiaGerber, and other celebs and decided to recreate it! Also I’m not kidding: Literally sleeping/taking a nap in styled hair will get you that perfect “effortless” texture 😆 Curling wand: @gisou Texturizing spray: @fekkaihair . . . #hairtutorial #hairtips #hair #messywaves #wavyhair #hairtok #hairstyles #beachwaveshair ♬ original sound – Kristina Rodulfo
How To Style Bedhead Waves
Those with more texture in their hair can get away with minimal styling, but if you need an extra helping hand then Sabrina suggests some light heat styling. ‘It’s important to achieve the right balance of relaxed and effortless without veering into frizzy,’ she warns. ‘Start with a heat protector, which is especially important if using heating tools such as a flat iron or curling tong, and switch to a low heat setting to maintain the hair’s texture. Alternating the direction of the waves and leaving the ends slightly straighter gives a more “lived-in” look.’
What Next?
Don’t expect this style to disappear anytime soon. ‘Bedhead waves are likely to evolve as a timeless yet adaptable style,’ notes Sabrina. ‘Carefree and low-maintenance styles which focus on simplicity are set to gain more even momentum in 2025. As people become more conscious of haircare and hair health, this will likely expand to meet the demand for styles that are all about embracing hair’s natural beauty and texture.’
