This classic is making a comeback
When we think of the timeless trendsetters, our mind immediately goes to Jane Birkin. One of the original influencers, the British-French actress and singer was a force of nature in fashion, beauty, film and music. So much so, that her impact is felt even to this day. It was therefore only a matter of time before the megastar collided with this year’s biggest hair movement, to create the chicly undone Birkin bob.

What Is A Birkin Bob?
‘The Birkin bob is a modern twist on the classic bob haircut, inspired by Jane Birkin’s iconic French girl style,’ explains Bridget Hannon, founder of Blush and Blow London. ‘This version combines the timeless bob’s structure with a relaxed, tousled texture, giving it a more “lived-in” or effortlessly chic look. It also features subtle layers and slightly messy ends, creating a laid-back aesthetic that mimics a “I woke up like this” vibe.’
It’s this undoneness, paired with a ruffled fringe and fluffy texture, that makes the Birkin bob so eye-catching. ‘Unlike the sleek, polished nature of a classic bob, the Birkin bob embraces a more natural, undone texture,’ highlights Bridget. ‘While the classic bob is usually cut in a straight line and kept smooth, the Birkin bob focuses on creating a more textured and slightly imperfect look, giving it a casual and versatile feel. It’s also usually paired with Birkin bangs, which just graze the eyebrows.’
Tapping into the current preference for chic, low-maintenance hairstyles, the trend has proven to be a big hit with celebrities. Both Zendaya and Selena Gomez have worn Birkin bobs in recent years, as well as Emma Stone. ‘Emma Stone has also worn a Birkin bob,’ adds Bridget. ‘Although she opts for a side parting, rather than a full fringe – showcasing a softer take on the look.’

Who Suits This Cut?
The natural ruggedness of this cut means that it favours all hair textures. ‘It can also be adapted with different lengths and layers to suit almost any face shape,’ adds Bridget. ‘Although the Birkin bob does work best on medium to fine hair types, because it allows for the slight layering and tousled texture that define the style.’
How To Ask For A Birkin Bob In The Salon (& What To Expect)
‘When asking for a Birkin bob at the salon, emphasise that you want a relaxed, layered bob with a slightly undone texture and a messy fringe,’ advises Bridget. ‘Bring inspiration images with you. No hair stylist will ever be upset with you showing them exactly what you want – it helps them.’
As for what to expect in the chair, Bridget explains that the process starts with a classic bob – before the fun begins. ‘After a good wash (including that dreamy salon head massage), the hair is cut wet into a bob,’ she says. ‘Then soft layers are added and texturing techniques are used to great that “relaxed” look. Once you’re happy with the length, a fringe can then be cut in. This will usually be a little longer than the final look. The hair is then blow dried, and your stylist will check the ends are straight and trim your fringe to eyebrow length. Light weight products are then used to add texture and finish off the Birkin bob.’

How To Style A Birkin Bob
While low-maintenance, on the days you do want to give your Birkin bob some bounce Bridget recommends leaning into volume-inducing techniques and styling products. ‘Texturising spray and mousse will be your best friend,’ she emphasises. ‘Dry shampoo is also a great way to add volume to hair. Blowdrying your hair upside does and scrunching it will add more texture and volume.’
What Next?
It’s a classic, but can anything more be done with the Birkin bob? ‘The low-maintenance (yet chic) Birkin bob has been around for years, and I can’t see it going anywhere,’ says Bridget. ‘I think people will play with the length a little more, as well as the styling of Birkin bangs.’
