Tips from the experts

Blondes may have more fun, but we certainly have more colour complaints. With hefty grey clouds sitting over the UK for the last 18 months, your locks might be looking a little lacklustre. So how can we revitalise blonde hair and keep it looking shiny and vibrant year-round? We picked the brains of the experts to find out. Whether you’re a champagne blonde, a dragon blonde or a natural blonde, here’s what Seniz Alkan, colour director at Neville Hair & Beauty, has to say.

How To Maintain Your Natural Blonde Hair In The Summer

When the sun comes out, your first strategy might be to get out ASAP to expose your blonde hair to the sun’s rays and hopefully get some natural lightening. However, Seniz Alkan at Neville Hair & Beauty warns this isn’t the best idea. ‘Just like you protect your skin, your hair needs SPF love too,’ she says.

‘Avoid washing your hair everyday – more like two to three times a week is better – and protect your hair by wearing a hat or using UV-protectant hair products,’ Seniz recommends. ‘Opt for hair products that contain UV filters. Keep your hair hydrated by using hydrating shampoos and conditioners. Look for products specifically formulated for blonde hair to maintain its natural vibrancy.

‘During summer, go easy on the heat styling,’ Seniz adds. ‘Air dry your hair whenever possible and use heat protectant sprays if you use hot tools.

Plus: ‘Keep split ends at bay by scheduling regular haircuts with your stylist,’ says Seniz. ‘This helps maintain the health and appearance of your blonde hair.’

How To Maintain Bleached Blonde Hair

‘To turn your hair bleached blonde, you’ve probably had to use bleach – that’s already caused a fair bit of damage, so now you’re on damage control,’ says Seniz. ‘Wet hair is more susceptible to being damaged, so avoid brushing or combing it until it’s dry.’

Plus, deep conditioning treatments are your new best friend: ‘Bleached hair tends to be more prone to dryness and damage,’ says Seniz. ‘Use weekly deep conditioning treatments to keep them soft and healthy.

‘Invest in a good toning shampoo or conditioner to neutralise any brassiness and keep your blonde looking fresh and vibrant,’ Seniz adds.

And if you’re a fan of a summer cool off in a swimming pool, be careful. ‘Chlorine and saltwater can be harsh on bleached hair, causing it to become even more dry and brittle,’ says Seniz. ‘Before going swimming, wet your hair with water and apply a leave-in conditioner or oil to create a protective barrier. Or consider wearing a swimming cap!’

Easy Ways To Maintain Blonde Hair Year-Round

Here are six easy methods Seniz recommends to keep your blonde hair looking perfect year-round.

  1. Rinse your hair with cool water
  2. Use a weekly hair mask
  3. Try a purple shampoo for the brassiness
  4. Have a monthly trim
  5. Try a chamomile tea rinse: make some chamomile tea, let it cool, and use it as a final rinse after shampooing to enhance natural blonde tones
  6. Use coconut oil, which is a natural moisturiser that can help keep blonde hair soft and healthy. Apply it to your hair and leave it on for a few hours or overnight before shampooing.
