How To Pick The Perfect Bob For Your Face Shape

Don't worry, there's a bob for everyone
Craving a hair transformation? Look no further than the cut of the moment: the bob. But before you dive into the trend, it’s important to know how your features will impact your bob – namely, your face shape.
Does Face Shape Matter When Getting A Bob?
When it comes to a bob, your face shape will factor into how the haircut will sit and need to be styled. ‘Your face shape plays a significant role in determining which bob style will suit you best,’ explains Jake Unger, stylist and Head of Education at HOB Salons. ‘Different face shapes – round, square, oval, heart-shaped, long, diamond – pair better with specific bobs to give your hair extra wow factor.’
So, how can do you find the perfect bob? ‘Once you know your face shape, you’re going to want to pick a haircut that counteracts that shape,’ says TikTok user @beautyby__chantelle. ‘For example, with a round face shape, you don’t want a haircut that’s also round. It’s going to cut your face off, because your face is already a little shorter. You want something that’s going to elongate your face.’

Bob haircuts, however, are a little special since they can be easily tailored to the individual. ‘Bobs are back for 2024 and suit every client and hair texture,’ agrees Jake Unger. ‘The bob is incredibly versatile. It can be sleek and shiny or incorporate sexy waves and lots of movement. It will always be a fashion staple, but subtle differences each season regarding lengths, shapes and styling are crucial to achieving the best look.’
We run through the best bob styles for each face shape below:
Which Bob Suits…
A Round Face
Hairstyles that help elongate will work best for those with a round face shape. ‘For a flattering and slimming effect, consider opting for a longer bob with subtle layers,’ recommends Jake. ‘This style choice not only elongates the face but also adds dimension and movement to your hair. Steer clear of overly blunt or chin-length cuts, as these can accentuate roundness and detract from your desired look. Instead, embrace the versatility of a longer bob, allowing it to gracefully frame your features while enhancing your overall appearance.’

A Square Face
In contrast, a square face shape will want something that enhances softer, rounder features. ‘To soften angular features, a textured bob or a side-parted style can work wonders,’ Jake adds. ‘These options help to add dimension and create a more gentle silhouette, effectively softening the angles of the face. Additionally, consider incorporating face-framing layers or soft bangs into your hairstyle. These subtle elements can add a touch of softness while framing your face beautifully.’

An Oval Face
Lucky ovals will find their face shape suitable for pretty much any bob hairstyle. ‘With your balanced proportions, most bob styles are sure to complement your features beautifully,’ agrees Jake. ‘Take advantage of this versatility and experiment with various lengths and textures to discover your signature look. Whether you prefer a sleek and polished bob or a more textured and tousled style, embrace the opportunity to play with different variations until you find the perfect fit that reflects your unique personality and style.’

A Heart-Shaped Face
It’s all about striking a balance for those with a heart-shaped face. As Jake notes: ‘To balance a wider forehead, consider opting for a chin-length bob or a layered cut. These styles draw attention away from the forehead and create a more harmonious overall appearance. Additionally, side-swept bangs can work wonders in softening the forehead while adding dimension to your hairstyle. By incorporating these elements into your haircut, you can achieve a flattering and balanced look that enhances your natural beauty.’

A Long Face
And finally, for long face shapes, the trick is to find a hairstyle with volume. ‘For those looking to add width and volume to the sides of the face, a textured or layered bob is an excellent choice,’ recommends Jake. ‘These cuts effectively break up the length and create movement, resulting in a fuller appearance around the face. By incorporating layers or texture into your bob, you can add volume and dimension to the sides, achieving a balanced and flattering look. Experiment with different styling techniques to enhance the volume further, such as tousled waves or subtle curls, to achieve the desired effect with style and confidence.’
