Short curls are having a moment, thanks to the cherub bob
The salons have spoke: Renaissance-style waves are in. But this trend isn’t just for the long-haired Venuses among us. Shaped into a halo of soft curls, the cherub bob is the short, low-maintenance take beloved by the style set. Here’s how to get the look.
What Is A Cherub Bob?
‘A cherub bob is very similar to a French bob, but the front is instead rounded upwards with a shorter fringe and heavy graduation through the back,’ explains Neale Rodger, Style Director at STIL Salon. ‘Effectively, it gives the look of a cherub angel.’
The stylist also tells us that the cut sits somewhere between the aforementioned French bob and a grown-out pixie, with plenty of emphasis on natural curls and texture. But it’s overall ‘halo’ shape is what sets it apart from other short hairstyles. ‘It differs from a traditional bob thanks to its rounder, fuller appearance,’ he adds. ‘It also contains a heavy graduation through the back which adds to that round, voluminous effect.
‘I think it’s also gaining popularity because it can be worn with natural textures and it involves a complete lack of blow drying,’ Neale continues. ‘This makes it very accessible for the majority of people who want to wear bobs.’

Who Suits The Cut?
As mentioned, this a cut that has been ‘designed with curly hair or loose curls in mind.’ Combined with ‘the graduation in the back, the shorter fringe and the shaping around the front ensures it gives maximum fullness to the wearer.’
However, this emphasis on fullness and roundness means that some people might struggle with the shape of the cut. ‘I would avoid this look if you have very thick hair, and also if you have a round face shape,’ suggests Neale. ‘The roundness of the shape combined with the fullness of the hair will tend to make the face look even rounder, essentially creating a double negative where you really want to be playing opposites with face shape.’
How To Ask For A Cherub Bob In The Salon
The number one thing Neale recommends is bringing in a reference image for your stylist. ‘It’s essential to have an understanding of what you see within your chosen reference,’ he says. ‘Because the cherub bob contains a lot of different techniques, you need to be very aware of what you’re asking for with this look.
‘You also need to be aware that because this cut has been designed for curly hair, the amount of graduation you see isn’t actually what was cut,’ he continues. ‘The curls and graduation need to be cut heavier than you think for the curl to spring up once it’s dried. Likewise with the layering around the front and the fringe. I wouldn’t be concerned while it’s being cut that it looks heavy and under-graduated or layered, as once it dries the curls will take over the technique and everything will spring into place.’

How To Style A Cherub Bob
Despite its intricate appearance, Neale tells us that the cherub bob is fairly low maintenance. ‘Again, because this cut has been designed with curls at the forefront, there should be a total lack of styling involved,’ he says. ‘The key is to use defining cream, worked evenly through the hair, and then allow the strands to dry as naturally as possible. I would avoid diffusers and brushes and really allow the technique of the haircut and the strength of the curl to do the talking.’
But if you feel the need to do a little styling, he suggests using ‘dent-free clips to hold the fringe in place as it dries, and maybe push the hair behind your ears… but really less is more when drying curly hair.’
What Next?
‘The future of this shape will be an interesting one,’ muses Neale. ‘I feel that once people have explored the shorter rounder shape around the front they will become more adventurous with the graduation through the back. This will push the haircut to the next dimension making it even fuller, enhancing the curl more and generally creating a shorter, more extreme version of what we see now. Alternatively, it could go completely the opposite way with people who have experienced the graduation through the back, might want to start growing that out into more multi shapes, such as something a little bit more back-heavy.’
