Mid-length locks are back in style

Is the super-short era over? It might just be. And taking its place this season is the clavi-cut, the midi hairstyle of the moment.

What Is A Clavi-Cut?

‘The clavi-cut is a type of long bob that gets its name from the word “clavicle” – which refers to where it sits at the collarbone,’ explains Zoe Adams, Taylor Taylor London‘s International Hair Artist. ‘It offers the perfect balance between a bob and a longer cut; it’s short enough to resemble a bob hairstyle, but still long enough to pull into a ponytail. This style gives people the freedom of shorter hair without sacrificing the flexibility of longer styles.

‘What sets this hairstyle apart from a typical grown-out bob is the way the front sections are cut slightly shorter than the back, drawing attention to the collarbone,’ she continues. ‘The style features hair at the back resting on the nape of the neck, while the front layers gradually lengthen to graze the collarbone, creating a look that’s both edgy and sophisticated.’

And, with many of us now in our grown-out bob era, it presents the perfect solution to mid-length doubts. On the whole, we’re noticing a general shift away from super-short bobs towards midi hairstyles – and the clavi-cut is the top salon trend of the season. It’s also having a moment on TikTok, where creators have made over 159.4 million posts about the trend.

Who Suits This Cut?

The versatility of the clavi-cut makes it an easy one to adapt to pretty much any and all hair types, although Zoe notes that it ‘works particularly well for those with finer hair.’

How To Ask For A Clavi-Cut In The Salon

‘Ask for a longer-style bob with face-framing layers that graze your collarbone and nape of your neck,’ Zoe advises. ‘However, to ensure your stylist understands exactly what you want, always bring a reference image with you. This helps you both stay on the same page and ensures the cut aligns with your vision.’

How To Style A Clavi-Cut

Styling a clavi-cut will depend on your hair type, Zoe tells us. ‘Whether you’re aiming for sleekness or volume, remember that the right products will help you make the most of this versatile cut,’ she says. ‘For those with fine hair who want more volume, opt for a lightweight mousse that will add body without leaving your hair feeling crunchy or stiff. It will also help give your clavi-cut a fuller, bouncier shape.

‘For those with thick, wavy, or frizz-prone hair, focus on products that provide weight and control,’ she continues. ‘Look for a hair milk that smooths, hydrates and tames frizz, keeping your hair from puffing up too much.’

What Next?

Zoe sees the clavi-cut becoming a good starting point for further experimentation and bespoke styling. ‘As people continue to embrace more personalised looks, we may see the clavi-cut incorporating more diverse elements,’ she says. ‘Think choppy layers or blended textures that cater to different hair types and styles.’
