Meet the cloud bob: the soft, relaxed hairstyle that might just be spring's breakout hair trend
Craving a low-maintenance hair transformation? The cloud bob – aka, the salon’s latest obsession – could be just what you need. Here’s everything you need to know about this new, fluffy hair trend.
What Is A Cloud Bob?
‘The cloud bob is a short hairstyle that embraces a relaxed, undone aesthetic, making it perfect for those who want a chic yet low-maintenance look,’ explains Luke Tyrrell, hair stylist and colour specialist. ‘This modern take on the classic bob is defined by soft, seamless layers that create effortless movement and natural volume – resulting in a weightless, bouncy finish.’ Think soft and fluffy, like (you guessed it) a cloud.
The stylist tells us that the cloud bob’s ‘undone’ appeal is what makes it a standout trend for spring. ‘It perfectly balances effortless style with modern versatility,’ he says. ‘With the rise of undone, natural-looking hair, people are moving away from rigid cuts in favour of softer, more wearable shapes. This bob flatters a range of textures, requires minimal styling, and complements the current shift toward relaxed, low-maintenance beauty.’

Who Suits This Cut?
And thanks to its loose, relaxed styling approach, the cut can be easily tailored to the individual. ‘The cloud bob flatters round or square faces with soft, face-framing layers, while oval or heart-shaped faces can benefit from a slightly shorter length,’ notes Luke. ‘Fine hair gains volume from the layers, while wavy or curly textures enhance its natural movement. The key is narrowing down a personalised look.’
How To Ask For A Cloud Bob In The Salon
‘To ask for a Cloud Bob in the salon, it’s important to be clear about the soft, airy finish you want,’ advises Luke. ‘Ask your stylist for a “lightweight, textured bob with soft layering” to create that effortless, voluminous look. If you have a specific length or face-framing style in mind, make sure to communicate that too.’
The stylist also recommends bringing reference images to the salon – ‘especially if you’re aiming for a particular vibe like Hailey Bieber’s sleek version or Zendaya’s voluminous curls’ – and prepping hair with a light texture spray or mousse the day before ‘to help your stylist see how your hair naturally falls, making it easier to customise the cut.’

How To Style A Cloud Bob
For some added bounce, Luke recommends ‘adding a mousse to damp hair for volume and grip,’ then using ‘a blow dryer with a round brush to lift the roots and create soft, bouncy movement.’
But for those days when styling isn’t an option, the cloud bob can look just as chic with minimal work. ‘For a more relaxed finish, let it air-dry or use a diffuser to enhance natural texture,’ advises Luke. ‘You can also add a few curls with a curling iron for extra body, but keep them loose to maintain the airy, effortless vibe.’
What Next?
Rather than sticking to one defining trend evolution, Luke sees the cloud bob branching off with loads of little, bespoke tweaks. ‘The cloud bob will continue to be a versatile, low-maintenance choice, but it will likely shift towards a more refined, customisable look that embraces personal style and natural texture,’ he predicts. ‘As haircare and styling technology advances, we may see bouncier, more defined versions of the cloud bob, with even lighter layers and customisable shapes that enhance natural movement.’
