A guide to haircare's new favourite herb

You might be more familiar with ginseng labels on your skincare products, but these days the buzzy herb is making waves in the world of hair. But what does it do, and can it really help with hair growth? We ask the experts to weigh in.

What Is Ginseng?

Ginseng is an antioxidant-rich herb popular in traditional Chinese medicine – but more recently, it’s been gaining traction online as a haircare hero ingredient. Creators on TikTok have propelled the status of the humble herb on the app, claiming it can help speed along hair growth and scalp health.

‘Ginseng has been a staple in traditional medicine for centuries, and it’s no surprise that it’s becoming increasingly popular in modern hair care routines, even trending on platforms like TikTok,’ notes Dr. Anil Sharma, medical practitioner and leading hair restoration expert at Sharma Skin and Hair Surgery. ‘This herb, known for its impressive nutrient profile, offers a wide array of benefits for both scalp health and hair growth.’

So, is ginseng worth the hype? Let’s find out.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Ginseng On Your Hair?

As Dr Sharma mentioned, ginseng offers a whole host of benefits when it comes to haircare. ‘Ginseng is a versatile and potent ingredient that can significantly improve hair health,’ he says. ‘It’s packed with essential vitamins – A, C, E and B vitamins – each playing a role in maintaining scalp health, while minerals like zinc and magnesium help fortify hair follicles and improve hair texture.’

The herb also rakes on a role in protecting our hair. ‘Ginseng is loaded with amino acids that help repair damaged hair and stimulate keratin production,’ Dr Sharma continues. ‘Its antioxidants protect hair from environmental stressors like pollution, UV rays, and free radicals, while fatty acids help balance and hydrate the scalp’s natural oils.

‘On a more fundamental level, ginseng strengthens hair by providing essential vitamins and minerals that help fortify hair strands, making them less prone to breakage,’ he continues. ‘Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Ginseng’s antimicrobial properties help maintain a clean and balanced scalp, reducing dandruff, irritation and inflammation.’

Can Ginseng Help With Hair Growth?

Speaking of hair growth, TikTok maintains that this is the main benefit of using ginseng in your hair routine. But how does it work? ‘It helps stimulate hair growth by activating hair follicles and encouraging the natural growth cycle,’ explains Dr Sharma. ‘By enhancing blood circulation to the scalp, ginseng ensures that hair follicles receive the vital nutrients and oxygen needed for healthier, stronger hair. The key active compounds in ginseng, such as ginsenosides, improve blood circulation to the scalp. This boost in circulation nourishes hair follicles, stimulating their activity and promoting stronger, healthier hair growth.’

But it’s not just hair growth that ginseng can lend a helping hand to – it’s also noted to be effective in preventing hair loss. ‘Its active compounds, particularly ginsenosides, help block the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which is known to contribute to hair thinning and male pattern baldness,’ highlights Dr Sharma. ‘By inhibiting this enzyme, ginseng reduces the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a major factor in hair loss.’

How To Work Ginseng Into Your Haircare Routine

Shampoo & Conditioner

Its growing popularity means that ginseng is becoming more common in routine staples like shampoo and conditioner – making it super straightforward to use. ‘Incorporating ginseng into your haircare routine is straightforward yet highly effective,’ adds Dr Sharma. ‘Start by looking for shampoos and conditioners that feature ginseng extract as a key ingredient. These products deliver ginseng’s benefits directly to your scalp and hair. With regular use, ginseng can help fortify the hair shaft, reduce breakage and protect the hair from environmental damage.’

Hair Oil

Need a bigger boost? Dr Sharma recommends trying hair oils that include ginseng. ‘For added moisture and strength, consider using ginseng-infused hair oils,’ he says. ‘However, I’d advise against using pure ginseng oil. Instead, mix ginseng root extract with a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil, and massage it into your scalp.

‘If your hair tends to get oily, apply the mixture an hour before washing. This process improves blood circulation, stimulates hair follicles, and supports healthier hair growth.’

DIY Hair Mask

If you’re prefer to steer clear of oils, however, then Dr Sharma suggests a DIY hair mask. ‘Combine ginseng powder with olive oil to create a nourishing mask,’ he instructs. ‘Apply it to your scalp for around 20 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Always patch test any new ingredient first – apply a small amount behind the ear, and wait 24 hours. If there’s no reaction, it’s safe to apply to your scalp.’

How Often Should We Use Ginseng?

Dr Sharma tells us that regular use is needed to keep the positive effects of ginseng in play. ‘Consistency is key when using ginseng,’ he says. ‘Use ginseng-based products two to three times a week and apply a hair mask weekly for noticeable improvements over time. If you’re considering supplements, consult a healthcare professional to ensure they are suitable for you. Lastly, always choose high-quality, organic products – and if you’re facing persistent hair or scalp concerns, seek advice from a specialist.’
