We’re seeing red. With autumn just around the corner, we’re swapping out sun-kissed, summery hues for deep burgundy, rich auburn and fiery copper. But that’s not all we can expect from the season. These are the AW24 hair trends to know now (and wear later):

1. Subtle Warmth
It might be the end of summer, but that doesn’t mean an end to the warm season. ‘Hair colour trends will be subtle this AW24,’ says Stephane Allain, a stylist at RYS Hair & Beauty. ‘But it will be big on warmer tones of reds and browns, especially cherry tones with chocolate hues. Glossy auburn look will be one of the key colour trends for this season. Think shades of red, ginger, cherry chocolate, as well as creamy blondes.’

2. Spiced Rum
Speaking of the seasonal shift, our experts also predict a deepening of rich, blended colours. ‘Traditionally, colours tend to go deeper as we transition into the autumn/winter season. 2024 this is no different,’ emphasises Tina Farey, Editorial Director of RUSH Hair. ‘This season especially will have a huge focus on brunette and deep red tones. A new shade, known as “spiced rum”, will be a gorgeous bespoke blend of the two hues and become popular in salons.’

3. Rich Merlot
Red, for autumn? Groundbreaking. No, really. Red is back in a big way this season, ranging from the aforementioned chocolate cherry hybrid to coppery ginger and rich wine. ‘This fall, rich, deep red hair colours are set to dominate the seasonal trends,’ confirms Suzie McGill, International Artistic Director of Rainbow Room International. ‘These luxurious “merlot” shades, created by blending red and blue tones, offer a lustrous finish that works well on various hair lengths and textures.
‘Particularly striking on short, cropped cuts and curly hair, these shades add dimension and enhance natural patterns,’ she continues. ‘The versatile colour can be applied subtly over brunette bases without pre-lightening, making it an accessible trend for many.’

4. Syrup Blonde
Not ready to let go of your blonde hair? Don’t worry, there’s no need. If you fancy giving it an autumnal update, however, consider golden, syrupy shades with some lingering warmth. ‘Deep golden tones are really becoming popular,’ highlights Becky Hare, Colourist at Brooks & Brooks Salon. ‘For the last few years it’s been a battle of getting blondes as light and cool as possible, and shying away from warm tones. But with an old picture of Rihanna resurfacing this AW24, the warm tones are back – and it looks as though they’re here to stay for a season or two.’

5. Bespoke Copper
Autumn also signals a return of the mighty copper. ‘Copper is a colour that never seems to go out of style as there’s so much range to it,’ says Becky. ‘Last year, the coppers we were seeing were very orange based, but this year I see people opting for a deeper, more earthier auburn. It’s a lot easier to maintain and can be tweaked and personalised to each individual.’
‘Copper tones are making a major comeback,’ confirms Zoe Adams, International Artist at Taylor Taylor London. ‘This super flattering hue actually covers all variations from strawberry blonde through to a more intense russet. But crucially, our colourists this season are mixing softer, cool tones within the copper as you want to avoid anything veering towards the orange tones.’

6. Red Velvet
Another rouge hue taking charge this season, red velvet looks just as sweet as its namesake. ‘This is all about creating a matte red,’ says Zoe. ‘It can be multiple shades of deep, luxurious red, and is perfect for those wanting to embrace a more dramatic change. Rich, velvety reds are in vogue, offering a bold yet timeless option for the season. These shades are ideal for adding warmth and intensity to your winter wardrobe.’

7. Espresso Gloss
Moving away from the reds, this is also the season for ultra-glossy rich browns. ‘Chocolate and espresso tones still reign supreme over the winter months,’ says Zoe. ‘This season, brunettes are embracing richer, darker shades with subtle highlights for a luxe, polished finish. The trend is all about enhancing natural beauty, with deeper hues that create a glossy, sophisticated look. Go for those long lengths for the ultimate luxe finish.’

8. Gilded Brunette
You don’t have to say goodbye to the sun completely, either, as this AW24 hair colour trend will tell you. ‘Taking cues from the likes of Hailey Bieber and Gigi Hadid, brunettes are incorporating golden highlights for a sun-kissed glow even in the colder months,’ explains Zoe. ‘Gilded brunette is all about subtlety. Think soft, honey-coloured strands woven into darker hair for a multi-dimensional effect that brightens the complexion.’

9. Colour Blocking
A colour technique Zoe sees making a comeback this season is colour blocking. ‘We have moved away from the “money piece” and embraced a colour block that runs from the roots to the ends, either positioned to frame the face or placed at the side of the head,’ she says. ‘For a more subtle look, the colour can be just a single shade away from your own hair colour. Or, if you want to make more of an intense statement, go up to five shades.

10. Pumpkin Spice Balayage
And what is autumn/winter without a little pumpkin spice? While regular pumpkin spice will always be popular around this time of year, we’re seeing salons revamp the look with balayage. The technique mixes warm tones of brown, red, copper and sometimes blonde to create a rich, vibrant look that’s reminiscent of the flavour of pumpkin spice. And it’s relatively low-maintenance upkeep will surely make it a winning shade this season.
