Looking to upgrade your at-home beauty routine? Try one of these LED masks

The beauty gadget boom is here. Whether you’ve spotted skincare buffs on TikTok wearing them (usually as part of an intricate morning shed routine) or listened to dermatologists rave about their benefits, LED masks are the hottest piece of kit on the market right now. But do they really work? We asked skincare experts to give their honest opinion on the trend.

What Is An LED Mask?

‘An LED mask is a skincare device that uses varying wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin at different depths, stimulating cellular activity and targeting specific skin concerns,’ explains Emma Coleman, Senior Magnitone Ambassador, Clinic Director and Dermatology Nurse. ‘The technology behind LED therapy has been widely studied in dermatology and has been incorporated into both clinical treatments and at-home skincare regimens.’

Dr Nyla Raja, a cosmetic doctor and dermatologist, adds that LED masks can help treat a wide range of skin concerns. ‘These masks are equipped with different wavelengths of light, each designed to penetrate the skin at varying depths to stimulate collagen production, improve elasticity, reduce inflammation, and target acne-causing bacteria. LED therapy has been praised for years due to its ability to deliver visible and long-term skin improvements without the need for invasive treatments.’

How Does It Work?

‘LED masks work by emitting specific light wavelengths that interact with the skin at a cellular level,’ explains Dr Nyla. ‘Unlike UV light, which can damage the skin, LED light is completely safe and stimulates natural biological processes. The process is painless, requires no downtime, and can be effectively used both in clinic and at home to maintain results between professional treatments.’

Both experts highlight that different colour LED lights can target specific skincare goals:

  • Red Light: Simulates collagen and elastin production, reducing fine lines and improving skin firmness
  • Blue Light: Combats acne by destroying the bacteria responsible for breakouts
  • Green Light: Soothes sensitive skin and balances oil production
  • Yellow Light: Reduces redness and enhances skin hydration

What Are The Benefits?

As highlighted above, using an LED mask regularly can offer up a host of benefits for your skin. Emma shares some of the top advantages below:

  • Collagen Boost: Regular use can lead to increased collagen production, which helps improve skin elasticity and reduce wrinkles.
  • Skin Healing: They also support skin healing, reducing inflammation and calming conditions like rosacea and eczema.
  • Soothes Acne: Blue light therapy is particularly effective for acne-prone skin, as it eliminates bacteria and prevents future breakouts.
  • Even Skin Tone: LED therapy also enhances overall skin tone and texture, brightening dull skin and reducing hyperpigmentation over time.

‘Regular use can result in clearer, brighter, and firmer skin, making LED masks a staple in both professional treatments and home care routines,’ says Dr Nyla.

Are They Safe?

‘Yes – LED masks are generally very safe, as they do not use UV light or generate heat that can damage the skin,’ say Emma. ‘They are non-invasive and suitable for most skin types, making them an excellent alternative to more aggressive treatments.’

‘Unlike laser treatments or chemical peels, LED therapy does not cause skin irritation or downtime,’ adds Dr Nyla. ‘It is a non-invasive, painless procedure with no risk of burns, making it suitable for all skin types.’

Who Can Use An LED Mask?

‘LED masks are suitable for nearly all skin types, making them one of the most versatile skincare technologies available,’ notes Dr Nyla. ‘However, individuals with photosensitive conditions, those on certain medications such as isotretinoin, or those with active skin infections should seek professional advice before using an LED mask.’

‘People with epilepsy or a history of seizures should also exercise caution, as the flashing lights from some LED devices may trigger symptoms,’ Emma adds.

If you have the opportunity to try LED therapy under the guidance of a dermatologist, our experts say, they can also provide an assessment to ensure it is safe and beneficial for your skin type and concerns.

How To Use An LED Mask

If using an LED mask at home, our skincare experts recommend booting up for use in the middle of your usual routine – after cleansing, and before applying any serums, moisturisers or any other topical treatments. ‘This ensures that the light energy can effectively penetrate the skin without any barriers,’ notes Emma. ‘Start with clean, dry skin to ensure maximum light penetration. Place the mask over your face, ensuring it fits comfortably and covers all areas evenly. Most masks operate with a built-in timer, usually set between 10 to 20 minutes per session. It’s recommended to remain still during treatment to allow consistent exposure.’

The reason you should wait to apply any products with active ingredients, according to Dr Nyla, is because ‘light therapy primes the skin to absorb active ingredients more efficiently, making it the perfect pre-treatment step. In-clinic, LED therapy is often incorporated after facials, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels to accelerate healing and enhance the overall glow and rejuvenation of the skin.’

Emma adds that the kinds of products you’ll want to apply post-treatment include ‘a hydrating serum or peptide-rich moisturiser to help to lock in the benefits and further enhance skin regeneration. If using active ingredients like retinol or acids, it’s best to apply them after the LED session to avoid irritation.’

How Often Should You Use An LED Mask?

‘For optimal results, an LED mask should be used around three to five times per week, depending on the skin concern being targeted,’ recommends Emma. ‘Individuals looking for anti-ageing benefits may use red light therapy more frequently, while those treating acne may opt for daily blue light therapy during flare-ups.

‘To maximise the benefits of an LED mask, consistency is key,’ she adds. ‘Incorporating the device into a well-balanced skincare routine enhances its effects, especially when combined with high-quality serums and hydrating products. While LED therapy offers impressive results, it should not replace fundamental skincare steps such as cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection. Pairing LED treatments with a healthy lifestyle, adequate hydration and sun protection will help maintain long-term skin health and radiance.’

Can You Overdo It?

If you’re not careful, yes. While regular use is recommended, it’s also important not to go beyond the suggested usage. As Dr Nyla notes: ‘While LED masks are safe for frequent use, overuse can overstimulate the skin, leading to sensitivity. It is important to follow the recommended usage guidelines to avoid skin fatigue.’

‘Using the device for longer than recommended does not speed up results and may cause unnecessary stress on the skin barrier,’ adds Emma. ‘It’s best to stick to a structured routine for maximum benefits.’

Do LED Masks Actually Work?

The big question. And the answer? ‘Absolutely; LED masks have been clinically proven to improve skin health and appearance,’ says Emma. ‘They are widely used in dermatology clinics and recommended by skincare professionals due to their ability to stimulate the skin’s natural repair mechanisms.’

‘LED masks are backed by extensive clinical research and are a trusted technology in medical aesthetics,’ adds Dr Nyla. ‘In-clinic LED therapy is particularly effective due to its higher intensity and controlled settings, but at-home LED masks can also deliver impressive results when used consistently. Many dermatologists and aesthetic doctors incorporate LED therapy into facial treatments to enhance outcomes, as the light wavelengths penetrate deep into the skin to repair, regenerate, and improve overall skin health.’

Emma also notes that ‘while results are not immediate, consistent use over several weeks leads to visible improvements, with reduced fine lines, clearer skin, and enhanced radiance.’

And Are They Worth The Investment?

With the above in mind, it makes sense that an LED mask would be a worthwhile investment if you’re looking up your at-home skincare game. ‘They’re great for those looking to improve their skin health in a non-invasive, pain-free way,’ adds Emma. ‘While professional in-clinic treatments offer the most powerful results, high-quality at-home LED masks provide a convenient and effective alternative. Investing in a reputable brand with clinically proven technology ensures long-term skin benefits. While results take time, consistent use delivers noticeable improvements, making them a cost-effective addition to a skincare routine.

Dr Nyla also notes the cost benefit of an LED mask: ‘The ability to target multiple skin concerns in a single device makes LED masks a cost-effective addition to any skincare routine.’

How To Look After Your LED Mask

Being a beauty tool designed for regular usage, it’s important that LED masks are properly looked after between uses. ‘Proper maintenance is essential to ensure the effectiveness and hygiene of an LED mask,’ confirms Emma. ‘It should be wiped down with a soft, damp cloth or an alcohol-free antibacterial wipe after each use to prevent bacterial buildup. But avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the LED lights.’

Dr Nyla also recommends ‘storing the mask in a clean, dry place will help preserve its longevity. Hygiene is crucial when using LED masks, whether in-clinic or at home.’
