We're channelling 90s supermodel vibes
Embracing long hair this year? Then this is the trend for you. Word from the salon is that marquise layers are set to have a major moment – and we can see why.
What Are Marquise Layers?
‘Inspired by the elegant taper of a marquise-cut diamond, marquise layers are strategically placed to enhance shape and dimension, giving the hair a fluid, elongated effect,’ explains Sam Burnett, owner and Creative Director at Hare & Bone.
Typically cut into longer hair, the hairstyle features longer, heavier layers at the top, providing a thickness that deviates from short, choppy 90s-style layers. As such, it’s designed to emphasises the eyes, cheeks and lips. ‘The layers are subtle but precise, adding softness around the face while maintaining length and body through the ends.’
But why the sudden interest (especially after a year of short and sleek hairstyles)? ‘Right now, people want hair that moves beautifully without looking over-styled,’ notes Sam. ‘Marquise layers deliver that balance – giving softness and body while still looking sophisticated. They add dimension without the heavy choppiness of a shag or wolf cut, making them perfect for anyone who loves polished but low-maintenance hair.’

Where Did The Trend Come From?
‘The idea behind marquise layers comes from classic couture-inspired hairdressing – precision cutting combined with effortless movement,’ Sam tells us. ‘It also takes cues from the 90s supermodel blowout but refines it for a more natural, wearable finish. The trend has also been influenced by the recent shift towards quiet luxury. These are styles that look expensive, polished and effortless.’
Fast forward to the present day, and the cut is a burgeoning trend amongst the celeb style pack. ‘We’re seeing this layered effect on A-listers who embody timeless elegance with a modern twist,’ agrees Sam. ‘Celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Zendaya and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have been spotted with softer, flowing layers that frame the face and enhance their natural hair texture. It’s that “undone but expensive” look that always feels relevant.’
Who Suits This Cut?
Contoured to the face, it makes sense that marquise layers are popular; they’re meant to be tailored to the individual. ‘Marquise layers are incredibly versatile,’ confirms Sam. ‘They work best on medium to long hair and suit both straight and wavy textures. For finer hair, they add the illusion of volume and movement, while on thicker hair, they help to debulk and refine the shape.
‘Face shape-wise, they’re particularly flattering for oval and square faces as they soften the jawline and elongate the neck,’ he continues. ‘If you have a round face, ask for layers that start lower to create length and balance.’

How To Ask For Marquise Layers In The Salon
‘When asking for marquise layers, bring reference images to show the kind of movement you want,’ advises Sam. ‘Be clear about how much layering you’re comfortable with – this cut is all about tailored precision, so a skilled stylist will adapt it to your face shape and hair type.’
How To Style Marquise Layers
The low-maintenance quality of this cut means that styling isn’t a massive chore. ‘The beauty of marquise layers is that they look great with minimal effort,’ says Sam, ‘But if you want to enhance the shape, follow these steps:
- Prep – Start with a smoothing shampoo and conditioner to create the perfect foundation.
- Heat Protection & Volume – Apply heat protection and a volumising mousse for some lightweight lift.
- Blow-Dry – Use a round brush to smooth the hair, lifting at the roots for volume while keeping the ends soft and fluid.
- Soft Definition – If needed, use a large-barrel tong or straighteners in a ribboning motion to enhance the movement in the layers.
- Finish & Polish – Apply hair oil for shine and a dry texturiser to add a soft, airy finish.’
What Next?
Personalised cuts are going to be huge for the upcoming year, notes Sam – which is why marquise layers are flourishing right now. ‘The trend will continue to evolve towards even more bespoke, tailored cuts,’ he predicts. ‘We’ll likely see versions with softer face-framing layers or a subtle 70s influence for more volume and bounce. The trend aligns with the move towards high-quality, healthy hair – expect more focus on luxe conditioning treatments and precision styling to enhance natural movement rather than overworking the hair.’
