The chic bun designed for lazy hair days

It’s official: polished styling is out, and spontaneous, casual hair is in. And in the spirit of the shift, the beauty girlies on TikTok have set their sights on a messy version of the slick back bun. We ask hairstylists how to recreate the look.

What Is A Messy Slick Back Bun?

‘A messy slick back bun offers a more relaxed and playful variation of the classic slick back bun,’ explains Adem Oygur and Piera Maggio, owner and hairstylist at ADEM. ‘Unlike the sleek and polished look of the traditional slick back bun, the messy version incorporates a more undone aesthetic. You can leave some strands loose to frame the face or add texture to create a more casual and carefree vibe. This blend of messiness and structure results in a fun, effortlessly chic look that feels both spontaneous and put-together.’

And while slick back hairstyles have had a huge hold on us for a while now, it’s only recently that their messy-chic counterpart has really made a splash. It’s largely been fuelled by internet interest – Google reported that searches for the hairstyle doubled in July – with TikTok posts tagged #messyslickbackbun surpassing 122 million on the app.

But what makes it a standout style? ‘Trends these days lean towards minimalistic beauty routines, making low-maintenance hairstyles like this one highly desirable,’ suggests the ADEM team. ‘Women are increasingly embracing their natural beauty, and this style enhances it without needing extensive styling. Its adaptability to both formal and casual settings also makes it a versatile choice for any event.’

And, like its super-slick predecessor, the timelessness of the hairstyle make it a winner, season on season. ‘The messy slick back bun is a classic style that transcends trends,’ confirms Adem and Piera. ‘This makes it a go-to option throughout the year, for any occasion.’

How To Create A Messy Slick Back Bun

Intrigued? Put your skills to the test with the ADEM team’s step-by-step guide to creating a messy slick back bun, below:

  1. Prepare Your Hair: Begin by brushing your hair to remove any tangles and create a smooth base.
  2. Create a Ponytail: Pull your hair back as if you are making a ponytail, positioning it at the desired height on your head.
  3. Loosen and Twist: Shake the ponytail slightly to loosen it. Then, twist the hair and wrap it around the base of the ponytail to form a bun.
  4. Secure the Bun: Use a hair tie or bobby pins to secure the bun in place. For more volume and lift, tease your hair gently with a tail comb before twisting it into a bun.
  5. Add Texture: For a messy look, pull out a few strands around your face and the bun. You can also gently tug at the bun to create a more undone appearance.
  6. Optional Nourishment: Apply a leave-in conditioner or hair mask to add shine and nourish your hair.

Tips & Tricks

So, you now know the steps – but how about finessing your look? We asked Adem and Piera for any tricks we can use while styling the look.

The Twist & Loop Technique

First things first: technique. If you’re trying the steps listed above, but not having much luck, Adem and Piera recommend the following: ‘Hold the base of the ponytail with your left hand. Use your right hand to pull the ends of the hair up and to the side. Begin to twist the hair under and to the left until you form a loop. Pull the remaining ends of your hair through the loop and push outward until a bun forms.’

Styling Curly Hair

While you may have noticed plenty of people with straight or wavy hair trying the trend, it’s also a great one to try if your hair falls on the curlier side. ‘A messy slick back bun is particularly flattering for curly hair as it adds volume and thickness, allowing for more creative and dynamic looks,’ says the ADEM team. ‘When styling curly hair, ensure the bun is not too tight to avoid putting strain on your edges, which can cause thinning.’

Nourish Your Hair

And finally, keep your hair at its optimum health with added treatments. After all, healthy hair makes for prettier hair. ‘Incorporate a leave-in conditioner or hair mask for added nourishment and shine,’ recommend Adem and Piera. ‘This will promote the health of your hair while styling.’

What Next?

Expect plenty more messy fun from the slick back bun going forward. ‘The trend of the messy slick back bun is likely to continue evolving, with more women gravitating towards this timeless, chic and easy-to-maintain style,’ the ADEM team highlights. ‘As beauty standards continue to embrace natural and effortless looks, the messy slick back bun will remain a popular choice for its versatility and elegance. Additionally, we might see more variations and creative adaptations of this style, incorporating accessories or unique twists to keep it fresh and modern.’
