If there’s one era we’ll never tire of, it’s the 1970s. When we’re not obsessing over the fashion, films and music of the decade, our attention is firmly set on the hair. The same can be said for salons, which are bringing back the shag in a big way. The next iteration comes in the form of the mid-length shag, a choppy cut without the hard edge.

What Is A Mid-Length Shag?

‘A mid-length, or medium, shag is a trendy haircut that falls around shoulder length and features a choppy, layered cut,’ explains Katie Allan, celebrity hair stylist and founder of MAYFIVE Hair. ‘It creates a textured, tousled look with face-framing layers and often includes bangs. The hairstyle can be customised for a range of looks, from sleek to messy.’

Shag hairstyles have had something of a resurgence in recent years, partially fuelled by anemoia (longing for a period in time you never experienced) and viral hybrid styles like the wolf cut. And now, the spotlight has fallen on the mid-length shag. But what sets it apart? ‘This take differs from the classic shag as it is shoulder-length, while the classic shag is shorter,’ says Katie. ‘The mid-length shag also has softer face framing layers, where the classic shag features more pronounced, choppy layers and a more natural look. To sum up: the classic shag has a bolder, edgier texture, with shorter bangs.’

So, from what we can gather, it’s a softer, more wearable take on the shag – one which is becoming rather popular online. With over 24.7 million posts listed under #shaggymediumlengthcut and a further 79.2 million under #shaggymediumlengthcutnobangs on TikTok, it’s safe the say the hairstyle is flourishing amongst Gen Z especially.

Who Suits This Hairstyle?

Thanks to its tailored layers, the mid-length shag can be cut to suit pretty much anyone. ‘This is style that works well for most face shapes, especially oval, round and heart-shaped faces,’ confirms Katie. ‘The shag is also ideal for those with straight, wavy and curly hair – although naturally curly hair may need additional styling to enhance texture.’

It’s also good news for those with finer hair. ‘The mid-length shag is great for those seeking volume and movement,’ says Katie. ‘It’s particularly flattering for those with fine to medium hair, as the layers add body and dimension.’

How To Ask For A Mid-Length Shag In The Salon

It’s important to give your stylist as many details as possible before trying a new hairstyle. ‘Specify the length and clearly mention that you want a mid-length shag,’ recommends Katie. ‘For example, say, “I’d like a mid-length shag, which I’d like to fall around my shoulders.” Also explain that you want choppy, textured layers, indicating that you want the layers around your face to soften the look. If you want bangs, describe the style you prefer – wispy, curtain, full fringe.’

Having a reference image handy is also a good way to get your idea across. ‘If possible, show a photo of the style you have in mind,’ Katie says. ‘Visual references can help ensure you and your stylist are on the same page. By clearly communicating these details, you’ll help your stylist create the mid-length shag that best fits your style and preferences.’

How To Style A Mid-Length Shag

The beauty of the mid-length shag is that it can be dressed up or down, depending on the mood. Although, generally, this style thrives best when given some volume. ‘Apply a texturising spray or mousse to add volume and enhance the natural layers. Sea salt spray can give a beachy, tousled look,’ recommends Katie. ‘For a polished finish, blow-dry your hair using a round brush to add lift at the roots and smooth out the ends.

‘For a more relaxed, natural look, I’d suggest embracing you hair’s natural texture,’ she continues. ‘Use your fingers to tousle and separate the layers, enhancing the shag’s messy, textured appearance. You can also add in waves or curls using a curling wand on random sections of hair –this will add movement and dimension.’
