The perfect transition cut for the new year

As far as hair trends go, 2024 has been the year of the bob – but what’s in store for 2025? Haircare professionals are predicting a resurgence for the midi bob, a longer take on our favourite short hairstyle. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is A Midi Bob?

‘A midi bob is the more relaxed sister of the classic bob cut – it’s chic, classy and completely versatile,’ highlights Tina Farey, Editorial Director at RUSH. ‘As the name suggests, the midi bob is defined by its length, falling somewhere between the shoulder and collarbone. This cut has quickly become one of the most sought-after looks of 2024, and all for good reason. It’s the perfect opportunity for clients to shake up their look and try something different.’

It’s this transformational quality that gives the midi bob its popularity. ‘It’s a great way to dip your toe into experimenting with shorter styles without losing too much length,’ emphasises Tina. ‘In comparison to other bob hairstyles, which are often quite sharp and defined, the midi bob is a lot more free flowing and relaxed, whilst also having plenty more styling opportunities than the classic bob cut.’

‘Midi bobs have been the number one request in the salon, with clients often opting for the cut as “a change” to their long hair,’ adds Suzie McGill, International Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International. ‘This cut can revitalise the hair to create healthier, fuller, thicker looking locks, getting rid of split ends and preventing further damage – the midi bob can be a complete revamp for your appearance. And an added bonus is that it looks insanely chic!’

Who Suits This Cut?

Despite its definitive length, both stylists maintain that it can be styled to suit almost any face shape and hair type. ‘If you’re considering a midi bob, then you’re in luck – this cut suits almost any face shape,’ confirms Suzie. ‘From accentuating the face structure of those with a heart shaped faces to harmonising the features of those with a round face shape, the mid bob looks great on all.

‘As for hair types – those with straight hair will have a more sleek, defined look, while those who opt for a midi bob with naturally wavier hair have a more relaxed undone look.’

How To Ask For A Midi Bob In The Salon

The professionals recommend simply asking for a mid-length bob. But be warned, you’ll need to be a little more specific with styling elements. ‘Your stylist will know what a midi bob is when it comes to length,’ adds Tina. ‘It’s more the case of getting your midi bob to look exactly how you would like it. Some clients opt for all one length when it comes to the midi bob, others have layers worked through, whilst others opt for longer in the back and shorter in the front. Remember haircuts are individual to you – your stylist can help personalise it and they can also give you suggestions of what they think would suit you best.’

If you’re struggling to explain how you’d like the cut to look, try bringing in some reference images from Instagram or Pinterest. This way, you have a visual example to show your stylist.

How To Style A Midi Bob

Want to stay on trend with your midi bob? Opt for volume and bounce. ‘I always think a midi bob looks gorgeous with a bouncy, voluminous blow-dry. It just heightens the overall cut,’ says Suzie. ‘Adlayers throughout makes for volume, definition and drama – while looking totally glamourous.’

What Next?

Expect to see more people wearing this cut in 2025. ‘I think we’ll be seeing a lot more midi bobs in the new year as a change for 2025,’ agrees Tina. ‘I’d love to see more clients pairing this cut with wispy face framing bangs to add to give this look that extra oomph!’
