You’ll find over 133.2 million posts tagged under #hairmoneypiece, with creators showing off their dyed locks with an expertly styled do. ‘It is a popular trend at the moment,’ confirms Charlie. ‘People can have a fun and bold change without changing their whole head of hair. Lucky for us, money piece hair is a super adaptable trend. ‘This is a style that can suit anyone,’ confirms Charlie. ‘It draws people in and adds a slight edge to the hair. It can also be bold or subtle to suit the client’s personality, so it really can work for anyone.’
How To Ask For Money Piece In The Salon (& What To Expect)
Charlie suggests bringing in some pictures and ideas that you can show your stylist. ‘I always think a reference photo is handy,’ he says. ‘Especially considering so many celebs have had a money piece, there will be loads of references out there. Otherwise you can just describe how bold or natural you want the money piece and that will be helpful to the stylist.’
As for the creation of this look, Charlie tells us that the execution might differ between salons – but the general result, with lighter layers around the front, should stay the same. ‘I’m sure different stylists will have their own techniques,’ he says. ‘Personally I like to use back-to-back sliced sections in foils to ensure lift and visibility.’

A change in colour, perhaps? ‘At the moment, it’s common for a money piece to be created in variations of blonde,’ says Charlie. ‘I think more people are starting to be experimental with their hair and the money piece can be used for bright colours too. Think pops of bright colour around the face. Alternatively, I can see multiple money pieces placed all around the head, so not only at the front but also underneath. It could evolve that way.’
