The Mouse Haircut Proves That Long Hair Is (Still) Thriving

Meet the style scurrying into the salon

Bobs may be having a moment, but that doesn’t mean long hair is off the table this season. And the latest trend to hit our feed is the mouse haircut – which has already been given the celebrity seal of approval by the likes of Daisy Edgar-Jones, Dakota Johnson and Taylor Swift.

What Is A Mouse Haircut?

‘A mouse haircut is a modest and understated look, featuring a mid-length or longer layered cut paired with a full fringe,’ explains Stéphane Ferreira, Operations Manager and Senior Stylist at Live True London. ‘This isn’t as dramatic as the layers of a wolf cut or octopus cut. Instead, it has rather simple and light layering throughout the hair, as well as a fuller fringe as opposed to choppy curtain bangs.’

But where did it come from? Stéphane pins the mouse haircut’s origins on the revived vintage aesthetic – and its growing popularity on the change in season. ‘It’s no surprise that this cosy cut is becoming popular during autumn,’ the hairstylist tells us. ‘As the weather gets cooler, we tend to see fringes become more popular. And as we see a comeback of 70s fashion each fall, we similarly see retro-inspired cuts rise in popularity too.’

Who Suits This Cut?

Stéphane tells us the adaptability of this cut makes it an easy winner for most people. ‘This look can be adapted to any hair texture, and the fringe can be worked to fit both tight curls and straight hair,’ the hairstylist confirms. ‘For face shapes, a fringe works best on longer faces with higher foreheads.’

How To Ask For A Mouse Haircut In The Salon

As you can imagine, the term ‘mouse haircut’ isn’t exactly popular lingo in the salon. Instead, Stéphane recommends you, ‘ask for long layers and a full fringe. It’s always worth bringing images with you so your stylist knows what you want to achieve. Take some time to discuss your hair type and how you want your layers to sit, as well as the length of your fringe.’

How To Style A Mouse Haircut

Very little energy is needed to make this hairstyle look good – although you can still freshen it up with a small bit of styling. ‘The great thing about this cut is that it is low maintenance,’ confirms Stéphane. ‘You can get away with using straighteners to shape your fringe and be on your way. To keep your fringe in place, we recommend using a styling spray or hair spray.

‘And to give more body and shape to the hair, you can add in some loose waves with a curling iron, brushing through with a wide tooth comb.’

What Next?

While we see this being a big trend for the long-haired amongst us, Stéphane predicts it’s only a matter of time before it gets adapted for shorter crops. ‘It’s likely that this trend will evolve to include shorter lengths, with mouse bobs being the next thing,’ the stylist says.
