You can't go wrong with a cute crop

Feeling hair envy? Us too. While a good bob never goes amiss, these days we have our eyes firmly set on its shorter cousin, the pixie. Plan your next salon visit with these fun, classy and flirty pixie cut ideas, designed to turn heads and make a statement.

What Is A Pixie?

‘A pixie cut is a super short, cropped hairstyle – usually short on the back and sides, slightly longer on top and with a short fringe,’ explains Michele Antiga, a signature colourist and stylist at Gielly Green Salon. The cut comes hot on the heels of 2024’s major bob movement, and presents a low maintenance alternative to the short hair trend.

In recent years, we’ve seen hundreds of celebrities brave the crop – and look fantastic while doing it. From Florence Pugh’s signature bixie cut and Miley Cyrus’s rockstar-infused pixie mullet, to Rihanna’s soft blonde crop, it’s clear: short hair is in.

But with new variations on the style popping up everyday, you might not be sure which rendition will work for you. But don’t fret. We’ve done all the hard work and rounded up some of our favourite pixie cut ideas. Happy styling.

5 Pixie Cut Ideas To Try This Season

1. Classic Pixie

It’s a classic for a reason. All pixie cut ideas stem from the original, which sticks to the ‘short back and sides, longer top’ formula set out by salons. The ultimate low-maintenance cut, if you’re struggling for choice then this is the first place to start.

2. Parisian Crop

The French girls certainly know how to have a good hair day. When it’s not a bob or loose waves, you’ll see the women in Paris rocking an artfully cropped cut, either lightly gelled into soft shapes or worn loosely to let any natural texture shine.

3. Bixie

Not sure if you can commit to a full pixie? Try the sweet spot between, aka, the bixie. ‘‘The bixie is a hybrid haircut that combines elements of a micro bob and a pixie cut,’ says Michele Antiga, signature colourist and stylist at Gielly Green. ‘It’s a short style – although longer than a conventional pixie – with lots of textured layers towards the crown and fringe.’ Ideal for those who want a little extra length to play with, the bixie is great for hair with more volume and texture.

4. Pixie Mullet

If you’re craving something with a little more edge, however, then it’s the pixie mullet you want. ‘A pixie mullet is a fusion of two classic haircuts: the pixie and the mullet,’ explains Phoebe Friend, hair stylist and salon manager at SHAG! West London. ‘It essentially brings together the short length of the pixie and the mullet’s long, layered look at the back of the head.’ Work in the front, party in the back? Don’t mind if we do.

5. Whisper Pixie

A shorter hairstyle doesn’t mean you have to give up texture, either. This take on the classic brings in a slightly longer length and a fringe to give the look a little more oomph. ‘A whisper pixie is like a pixie cut, but it has more texture, especially through the fringe,’ explains George Newton-Beck, a stylist and colourist at Blue Tit. ‘This gives a lot more movement to the haircut, combining a free-flowing feel but with an elegant look… It’s a low maintenance cut in terms of styling, which is really appealing for everyday wear.’

6. Soft Sculpt Pixie

A sleek, glamorous take on the look comes in the form of the soft sculpt pixie. ‘A soft sculpt pixie is a short haircut with soft edges that has been styled in a sculpted way to frame the face,’ highlights Stéphane Ferraira, senior colourist at Live True London. ‘The key difference here is that this cut has been styled to look structured, instead of feathery and wispy like other pixie cuts.’ Think Jourdan Dunn and Zoe Kravitz.

7. The 90s Pixie

Nostalgia never goes out of style – especially when it comes to hair. Taking on the styling tents of the 1990s, this pixie cut is all about creating a textural chop. ‘The 90s pixie cut is a choppier, edgier version of the classic pixie,’ highlights Luke Sawyer, a stylist at Taylor Taylor London‘s Portobello Salon. ‘It tends to have a more wild, playful approach to texture – think of the decade’s grunge movement, and you should get the idea.’
