It can't hurt to be prepared

If you’ve made it this far, then chances are a proposal is on the horizon. And while you may not know the exact ‘whens’ and ‘hows’, there’s nothing stopping you from making sure your manicure game is strong for that first ring pic. So, how do you get the perfect proposal nails? We ask the experts to break it down.

What Are Proposal Nails?

As the name suggests, proposal nails refer to the manicure you get just before being proposed to. Now, before you say anything – we know we’re not meant to know when the proposal will happen, but there’s no harm in being prepared. (Especially if your partner has been dropping some hints.)

‘In the past few months, we’ve spotted an increase in popularity of “proposal nails,”‘ says Ella Citron-Thompkins, an expert at the Diamonds Factory. ‘It’s an interesting concept because most of the time the proposee cannot predict exactly when the proposer is planning on popping the question. But clearly, people are looking to get prepared!’

And it seems the internet agrees. Alongside a surge in searches for proposal nails on Pinterest, creators are also taking to TikTok to share their proposal nails inspiration – amassing over 68.3 millions posts on the topic.

‘A proposal is such a special moment, you certainly won’t be worried about how your nails look at the time,’ she continues. ‘But that being said, if you are looking to try out a new nail design just in case, there are a few things we’d suggest to nail the trend.’

How To Create The Perfect Proposal Manicure

While there isn’t really a ‘wrong’ answer when it comes to creating the perfect set of proposal nails, there are some guidelines you can follow to ensure sophisticated post-engagement IG photos. Ella shares her tips on the do’s and don’ts of getting your nails proposal-ready below:

Stick To Timeless Colours

First things first: nail your colour. ‘A bold or overpowering nail colour is a riskier option when it comes to proposal nails for a few reasons,’ says Ella. ‘It might detract from the ring, drawing attention to your nails instead. If you’re unsure what style your partner is opting for, you may also risk a clash. And lastly, timeless rather than trend-led always works well when it comes to all things “engagement.”‘

So which colours are considered ‘timeless’? ‘Neutral tones like beige, nude or soft pink are ideal,’ recommends Ella. ‘You’ll achieve an elegant look that complements and enhances the beauty of your new ring with shades like these.’

Oval Or Almond?

There’s also the shape of your nails to consider. ‘When getting your nails ready for your engagement, the shape can make a remarkable difference to how your hands look,’ highlights Ella. ‘Choosing an oval or almond shape can give the illusion of longer, more elegant fingers, enhancing the overall appearance of your ring. These classic shapes are understated yet stylish, drawing attention to your ring without overshadowing it. Keeping your nails at a modest length will also help achieve a refined, sophisticated look.’

Pick A Simple Design

As they say, simple is best. ‘When it comes to nail design, the most important thing is to not detract too much attention from the ring,’ Ella tells us. ‘It is better to stay elegant and timeless with designs, like a French tip, abstract swirls and mini pearls. If you are looking for another colour to pair with your neutral base, then opt for bridal white (or ivory if you already have your dress colour in mind).’

Match Your Ring

This step will only count if you already have some inkling of what your ring looks like. ‘If you have already given your partner a few hints about which ring is for you, then you could consider complementing your future ring with your nail choice,’ suggests Ella. ‘For a white-gold or silver band, opt for a light pink base. And if you have a gold or rose-gold band, then choose a warm beige or cool nude as your base which will highlight the gold shimmer of the ring.’
